Volume 9, Issue 14
Dear Families,
Please check your child's bookbag this evening for the first
quarter report card. We apologize for the delay in getting
this information to you. Thank you for your patience this
year as the state transitions to PowerSchool.

If your child is interested in replacing one of his/her second
semester electives with journalism, please email your grade
level counselor. We have been able to add additional
sections of journalism at all grade levels so seats are
available.
As you may have heard from your child already, we have
launched a very important initiative in our Language Arts
classes over the last week: the “7-Minute Challenge.” The
“7-Minute Challenge” is an effort to increase the amount of
time students spend reading in school by seven minutes.
Research data has shown that even just seven additional
minutes of reading in school each day dramatically
increases students’ motivation to read at home, while
simultaneously exposing students to significantly more
vocabulary and content than they would during the typical
school day. Even in just one week, many teachers are
reporting amazing success with this very simple, high-yield
strategy. In fact, many teachers have shared that their
students often do not want to put their books down at the
end of the seven minutes. It is our sincere hope that you will
pick up this trend at home and read with your child as often
as possible. We also look forward to hearing from you about
how much more you’re seeing your child pick up his or her
book at home to read voluntarily!
Please enjoy a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable holiday next
week with friends and family.

ATTENTION, COMMUNITY HOUSE STAFF AND FAMILIES!!!
Please join us on December 7th for the “Wannabe Cancer Free 5K!” It would be great
to see staff and families at this fun race…good location, great music, dress up in
holiday attire. Folks can run, walk, or volunteer. For any CHMS staff member,
student or family who would like to participate, there is a discount. The code is
CMRATE. It will take off $5 and can be entered on the registration page. Anyone
with questions can contact Christy Babao at Christine.babao@cms.k12.nc.us.
Hi CHMS Parents,
I know it's too early to think holidays but it's time to start cookie planning! Thursday
Dec. 12th is our Annual Cookie Exchange for the staff at CHMS. If you're not familiar with
the event...it's a Staff favorite. Parents donate the cookie/treats. We set up the media
center like cookie boutique. Our Fabulous staff members check in to receive a Holiday
bag and go shopping.
Thank you for volunteering to help bake and send in cookies/treats. Without you this
event would not be possible! We have almost 135 Staff members...Each staff member
gets to pick 5 dozen....we need 790 dozen cookies/treats min. Plus our 60 Bus AM and
PM Bus drivers get 2 dozen cookies.
Goal of 800 dozen cookies....1600 bags! We almost hit last year...I know we can do it this
year!
Please let me know how many dozen you'll be donating by Dec 2nd. If
everyone commits to 5 dozen, we'll have enough for all the staff and bus drivers.
All cookies need to be in bags or plastic containers (see-through works best) of 6 and
dropped off in the PTO room by Wed., 12/11, or early AM Thurs, 12/12. Please put
cookie exchange or my name on it.
The staff enjoys all types of cookies, as well as Chex Mixes, fudge, chocolate popcorn,
pretzel mixes, and sugar- / gluten-free cookies. Please label any sugar free, peanut free,
or gluten free bags.
Also: This is my last year at CHMS. (It's been a wonderful 9 years.) I'm looking for my
replacement. It's not a hard event to plan. It's a little math, counting, emails, using
"Sign Up Genius," setting up the day before, and hanging out in the media center for the
day. If you like to hear more about it, please let me know. It's a wonderful event.
Please feel free to forward my email to your CHMS friends who love to bake and will send
in cookies.
I look forward to hearing from you soon....
Thank you again.
