Masters Degree in Reading
Ohio University offers an online Master’s Degree in Reading. The required courses (and their associated
semester credit hours) include:

EDTE 5600 Advanced Studies of Children
and Adolescents (3)
EDTE 6940 Masters Research Project (3)
EDSP 5700 Nature & Needs of Children
and Adolescents with Exceptionalities** (3)
Reading Courses
EDTE 5200 Foundations of Reading (3)
EDTE 5210 Foundations of Language (3)
EDTE 5220 Diagnosis: Reading/Language Arts* (3)
EDTE 5230 Reading Laboratory (3)
EDTE 5240 Children’s Literature (3)
EDTE 5260 Secondary Reading Instruction (3)
EDTE 5270 Phonics and the Structure of Language** (3)
EDTE 6230 Coaching Classroom Teachers in
Reading/Literacy (4)
*EDTE 5220 is prerequisite for EDTE 5230
**EDSP 5700 and EDTE 5270 are required unless comparable courses were taken as an undergraduate.
Neither course is currently offered online. If you need to complete one or both of these courses, you may
complete them at any time, but please plan accordingly and within credit-hour limits. If you took either
course as an undergraduate, they do not need to be retaken. This should be discussed with your advisor;
transcripts must be provided for verification.
With the exception of courses in the statement above, undergraduate courses will not be considered for
credit toward the graduate degree.
Upon completion of the program, candidates must take and pass the PRAXIS exam (Teaching Reading
#0204 or #5204 (computer-based)).
