Reading Endorsement The following courses are required for an endorsement in reading. In addition to the coursework candidates must pass the WEST E Reading test # 030. EDTE 231 Instructional Methods: Reading, Writing and Communicating Level I MIT’s - EDTE 540 Foundations of Reading and Language Arts 3 Credits (Fall Only) This course is an introduction to theories and practices supporting reading and language arts instruction K-12. Language acquisition, required skills and approaches in reading, writing, listening and speaking, and assessment will be examined EDTE 331 Instructional Methods: Reading, Writing and Communicating Level II MIT’s – EDTE 537 Integrated Instruction: Language Arts, Art, Music, and Drama 3 Credits (Spring Only) Co-requisite: EDTE 331L or for MIT’s EDTE 506 Field Experience This course assists teachers with the creation and implementation of literacy methods as a means of integrating the course curriculum. An emphasis of this course is the alignment of the methods to the Washington State Goals and the EALRs. Candidates may not substitute EDSE 451. EDTE 331L Field Experience, Co-requisite: EDTE 331 MIT’s – EDTE 506 Field Experience, Co-requisite: EDTE 537 1 Credit (Spring Only) The teacher candidate will complete a 30 hour in class field experience related to reading competencies. A supervisor will observe the teacher candidate at least two times during this field experience. MSTL 414 Literacy and the Second Language Learner (Fall Only) MIT’s - MSTL 514 Literacy and the Second Language Learner (Summer or Fall) 3 Credits This course provides literacy knowledge related to working with English as second language learners. Teacher candidates and tutors will create classroom materials for K to adult learners to support their learning of literacy knowledge. Students will invent and develop teaching ideas based on principles of first and second language acquisition, writing and reading theory. This knowledge will be translated into practical application through the creation of lesson plans and curriculum development, literature circles and other hands-on tasks and activities. EDTE 461 Reading Diagnosis MIT’s - EDTE 561 Reading Diagnosis 3 credits (Spring Only) A wide range of reading assessment tools are examined and applied to identify and diagnose reading strengths and deficiencies of K-12 students. Appropriate instructional strategies for remediation and extension are developed. EDTE 462 Children and Adolescent Literature MIT’s - EDTE 562 Children and Adolescent Literature 3 Credits (Fall Only) This course surveys classical and contemporary literary works for children and youth, preschool-early adolescent. Assessment and teaching strategies for the utilization of literature across the K-12 curriculum will also be a focus of this course. EDTE 464 Reading Practicum – Capstone MIT’s - 564 Reading Practicum – Capstone 1 Credit (Spring or Fall) This course creates and applies literacy instruction/assessment strategies in a K-12 classroom setting.
