The production area has more than doubled during the last ten years and the production of both the loose flowers and the cut flowers have been growing at 15% to 20% per year. Exports of floriculture products from the country have also registered phenomenal growth of 500% during the period. Commercial floriculture emerging as a viable agribusiness option has brought to focus the necessity for providing support mechanisms for releasing the true potential of the sector. An important key in the floriculture value chain is the availability of suitable marketing infrastructure for this highly perishable produce. Uttar Pradesh among the largest states in the country, has been an important horticulture state. In floriculture sector, with a production base of around 8,500 hectares, producing 12,500 MT of loose flowers and more than 375 million cut flowers (2007-08), and not counted among the major producing states, UP still plays a significant role in driving the domestic market’s growth. The domestic market estimated to be worth about Rs.1000 crore annually, with annual growth of 20% is mainly concentrated at Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). This market receives its supplies from all over the country, but primilarily from the adjoining states of UP, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Uttrakhand, and Rajasthan. While the market receives a wide range of flowers from across the country, the year round supplies of gladiolus and tuberoses (mainly from UP) influence the market growth significantly. UP Rajya Krishi Utpadan Mandi Parisad (UPRKUMP) in its continued endeavor a to strengthen the state’s agriculture marketing infrastructure, has established a “Flower Auction Centre-Cum-Wholesale Market” at Sector 88, Noida. UPRKUMP expects this facility to be an important instrument for promoting the trade of flowers and plants in the country. This centre will work as a national market place, offering the traders, a virtually complete range of floriculture products on a single site, and the 2 producers (growers/farmers), a large platform to realize the true price for their quality produce. The Noida Flower Auction Centre-Cum-Wholesale Market has been established over an area of 8 acres on a 30 acre premium location site on state highway. The market is conveniently located and is being connected with the Delhi Airport, Railway Stations at Delhi Main, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamudin and Anand Vihar ISBT, to facilitate produce transfer and arrivals. The modern, state-of-the art facility, established at a cost of about Rs.40 crores, partly funded by the National Horticulture Mission (Ministry of Agriculture, GOI) and Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) (Ministry of Commerce, GOI) includes: a. International standard Flower Auction Centre, based on ‘Dutch Auction Clock’ system with two clocks; 150 seat bidding hall, with computerized bidding terminals; thee (3) walk in cold stores to accommodate 4 lacs flowers, preserving the freshness of the unsold produce; large receiving, processing and distribution areas; and modern trolleys and crates for handling the produce before and after the sale. b. Wholesale shops of Category ‘B’ 10 number of 36 sq.m. (6X6m) size; and category ‘C’ 64 number of 18 sq.m. (6X3m) size. c. Kiosks: Five number, each with four separate windows for sale of floriculture accessories. d. Farmers’ Rest House to accommodate fifty (50) persons for short/overnight stay. e. Value Addition Centre built over an area of 1500 sq.m. f. Cold stores in 750 sq.m. area. g. Administrative Block in an area of nearly 2000 sq.m. to house the administrative offices; bank with ATM facility; post office; communication centre (ISD/STD/FAX/Photocopy/Cyber Café); and a cafeteria. h. Round the clock power backup and security arrangements. 3 More facilities are planned to be built as per demand in the large area available for expansion. The Noida Flower Auction Centre-cum-Wholesale Market is likely to become the nucleus centre for marketing of floriculture products from across the country in Delhi NCR. The centre is being linked for sourcing the supplies from major production states of Karnataka, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, North East and Andhra Pradesh, besides the adjoining states of Northern India. This largest organized market centre for floriculture products in the country is ready for commissioning. All the shops have been allotted, with preference being given for experience in floriculture business (trader, grower, grower’s association). Several interactions have been organized with growers of major producing states to link them with the market. Training on the working of the auction clock has been provided to prospective buyers.
