Security
IOM for possible intervention.
According to UNDSS, on 16 January, a remote control
road side bomb detonated near a police check post
located in front of the large Buddha in Bamyan center.
The families were lacking NFIs and warm clothing that
has put the families in vulnerable situation mainly
threatened by extreme harsh winter. The provision of
recommended assistance will reduce the vulnerabilities
of the families and will protect them from the ripple
effects of extreme winter.
Food Security and Agriculture Cluster
Islamic Relief ERF project proposal for addressing the
food gaps of 770 HHs in Yakawlang, is still in process
with OCHA HQ.
WFP has provided three months food ration to some
3,400 households in Bamyan (1200 HHs), Diakundi
(1200 HHs) and Ghor (Lal) (1000 HHs) provinces as
part of its winter support extended to 13 provinces
under WFP Kabul Area Office. The vulnerable families
in the CHR have received over 614 MT of mixed food
during October, November, and December 2013.
ERF projects:
ACF distributed food to 1550 dryness-affected families
in Quchangi and Baghal Kando from 6 to18 December.
1182 families were provided full rations (flour 150 kg,
rice 72kg, beans 30 kg, salt 3kg, sugar 15 kg, oil 15 Ltr)
and 368 families provided with half ration (beans 200
kg, sugar 5.52 kg) to complement the food package
provided by OHW/WFP winter distribution.
According to the community members the dryness has
been prevalent for the past 4 to7 years with its varying
impact in various villages in each year. There were high
demand for improving their irrigation systems with
deepening the springs and Karezes. According to local
people the steep barren surface make most of the water
flow without being absorbed that result in dryness of
irrigation sources. From 16 November to 16 December,
RoRA/Caritas-G s distributed food to 1,200 f
households in Sang-i-Takht district. 540 HHs were
assisted with 2 months food rations and 660 HHs were
assisted with 4 months rations. In the spring, 850 HHs
will receive wheat seeds (25 kg) and fertilizers(25 kg of
DAP and 50kg of UREA).
ES/NFIs
Bamyan Center :
A joint assessment by IOM, ANDMA, SCI, ARCS,
Women Affairs Directorate and Social Affair Directorate
of possible families affected by extreme cold winter was
conducted in Bamyan center for 13 days (10 November
to 1 December 2013). As a result of the assessment,
1,920 families were identified in need of NFIs. Save the
Children provided 800 of these families with a hygiene
box (1), children shoes (2 pairs), socks (2 pairs),
tarpaulin (1) and blankets (5 piece) and Maswak (1).
The families were from Qarghanato and Shiberto,
Azhdar, Mullah Ghulam, and Regshad villages.
ADRA distributed NFIs to 300 families in Petab e
Laghman (30), Zargaran (130), Surkhqul (140). Each
package contains charcoal (50 Kg), rubber shoes (4
paris), and socks (4 pairs). Another 45 families would
be provided only charcoal (150kg/family).
And, the remaining 820 families have been referred to
Districts of Bamyan:
A joint assessment of possible families affected by
extreme cold winter conducted by IOM, ANDMA, SCI,
ARCS, Solidarities International in 3 districts of Bamyan
(Waras, Panjaw, Yakawlang ) for 11 days (22
December 20 to1 January 2014). As a result of the
assessment, 996 families were identified in need of
NFIs (309 families in Panjab district, 333 families in
Waras district and 354 families in Yakawlang district).
The needs of the affected families have been referred
to IOM for possible intervention.
Health
On 11 January, two civilians from Kiti District died due
to hypothermia when coming from Kiti to their village
due to very low temperatures. PU-AMI is currently
verifying the reports.
