Friends of the Wagga Wagga City Library PO Box 5571 WAGGA WAGGA No 11, December 2015 Friends of the Library Christmas Morning Tea with the library staff. This will be on Friday 18th December at 10.30 till 11.30am in the Community Learning Space on Level One. Changing from our previous Celebratory Christmas Brunch due to the change in staffing within the library, this is the best option for gathering up the majority of staff at one time. There will be Christmas mince pies, Christmas biscuits, dip and crackers, cherries, coffee, tea, and fruit juice served. All Friends are especially asked to attend to have a short catch up for the end of year, and to thank the staff for their work during the year. There is no monthly meeting this month. The decision to purchase a new drink vending machine was approved at the October meeting, and the machine has now arrived. While this will deplete our funds for the initial outlay, the old machine is no longer serviceable. The new machine has chocolate bars, as well as the water, fruit boxes and cans of soft drink. It is proving very popular with all the library visitors. And it “purrs” in comparison to the old one. “Drinking with Jane Austen” is an event that will tickle your interest in the history of beverages of the 18th Century. This will be held at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre on Wednesday 9th December, at 6.30pm. Culinary historian, Richard Foss, is calling in to Wagga on his way to address the Jane Austen History Society in Sydney. His hour long talk will cover the alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks of the era. He will also spice the talk with the connections Jane Austen made with her characters and the food and drink they served. Various beverages of the era will be available to sample, along with light refreshments. Bookings are essential, and RSVP’s are needed by Monday 7th December, at the theatre. Phone the theatre on 69269688, or www.civictheatre.com.au. Cost is $30 per head. At the end of each year, the library has been promoting their “Food for Fines” charity food appeal, which runs until Christmas Eve 24th December 2015. Just near the TV and lounge area as you walk into the library on level one, goods are beginning to collect under the Christmas tree. Nonperishable food donations are welcome, especially everyday items. This may seem a bit mundane for the festive season, but advice from the Salvation Army, Smith Family and Vinnies is that after Christmas, their greatest need is for normal grocery items. Christmas closure hours: The library closes at 4pm on Christmas Eve, and reopens at 11am, on the 4th January. Remember you can borrow up to 50 items at a time, in case you are thinking you may need more items than usual to get through the time. The Knittin’ Group meet on the third Thursday every second month. Next date is 21st January 2016, from 10am till 2pm, in the Community Learning space on level one. The results of their knit or crochet efforts are all contributed to charity. Any spare wool donated would be appreciated. It can be left at the library front desk. Tea and Coffee are available A book launch on Saturday, 12th December at 11am in the Community Learning Space. Author Andrew Holt is a primary school teacher, yoga instructor and mindfulness trainer. Having travelled the world, dealing with children from many cultures, he has an appreciation for the wisdom of children. His first book “A wise apple tree helps me: Top tips for wise kids”, will be featured. The event costs $20, which includes a copy of Andrew’s book. Bookings are essential, Ph. 69269700 or book online wcl@wagga.nsw.gov.au. Next monthly meeting for the Friends won’t be until Tuesday 9th February at 4.45pm, in the Community Learning Space on Level One.
