Connecticut IB Academy to Inaugurate Juniors as IB Diploma Candidates
On Wednesday November 5, 2014, the Connecticut IB Academy in East Hartford will hold its 13th Annual
Junior Inauguration at 6:00 p.m. in the school Lecture Hall. The inauguration is a semi-formal event in which
the students are recognized officially as Candidates for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, an
international level of achievement that is well above that of a high school diploma. During their junior and
senior years, students must take and pass a series of six two-year classes and pass international examinations
with a minimum scores determined by the International Baccalaureate Organization© on each of the six
classes, research and present a paper on a topic of interest and inquiry, complete and pass an
interdisciplinary course called the “Theory of Knowledge,” and complete a project and a minimum number of
service hours under the category “Creativity, Action, Service” in order to receive the International
Baccalaureate Diploma.
CIBA will initiate the 48 juniors in the class of 2016 as International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates. The
class of 2016 consists of 19 students from East Hartford, 12 students from Hartford, and 17 students from
other towns in the Greater Hartford region. The students are formally introduced, welcomed by members of
the East Hartford Public Schools, hear presentations by representatives from their class, the class of 2015 and
an inspirational speaker selected by the students. This year, the students selected English teacher Dr. Ryan
Campbell to speak. The eight international exchange students from Brazil, China, Italy, Germany and Mexico
who are at CIBA for the academic year will be initiated as official CIBA International Exchange Students and
recognized for their contributions to the school’s international culture and climate.
The students are presented with a certificate of their status as International Baccalaureate Diploma
Candidates and memento designed to remind them of the significance of the inauguration and of being an IB
Diploma Candidate.
