Abelon Building 857 Forbes Street East Hartford, CT 06118 Ph (860) 622-5590 Fax (860) 622-5555 For Immediate Release October 30, 2014 Connecticut IB Academy to Inaugurate Juniors as IB Diploma Candidates On Wednesday November 5, 2014, the Connecticut IB Academy in East Hartford will hold its 13th Annual Junior Inauguration at 6:00 p.m. in the school Lecture Hall. The inauguration is a semi-formal event in which the students are recognized officially as Candidates for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, an international level of achievement that is well above that of a high school diploma. During their junior and senior years, students must take and pass a series of six two-year classes and pass international examinations with a minimum scores determined by the International Baccalaureate Organization© on each of the six classes, research and present a paper on a topic of interest and inquiry, complete and pass an interdisciplinary course called the “Theory of Knowledge,” and complete a project and a minimum number of service hours under the category “Creativity, Action, Service” in order to receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma. CIBA will initiate the 48 juniors in the class of 2016 as International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates. The class of 2016 consists of 19 students from East Hartford, 12 students from Hartford, and 17 students from other towns in the Greater Hartford region. The students are formally introduced, welcomed by members of the East Hartford Public Schools, hear presentations by representatives from their class, the class of 2015 and an inspirational speaker selected by the students. This year, the students selected English teacher Dr. Ryan Campbell to speak. The eight international exchange students from Brazil, China, Italy, Germany and Mexico who are at CIBA for the academic year will be initiated as official CIBA International Exchange Students and recognized for their contributions to the school’s international culture and climate. The students are presented with a certificate of their status as International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates and memento designed to remind them of the significance of the inauguration and of being an IB Diploma Candidate.
