Jones (1905 – 1945). 8 pm THE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA Amyn Merchant – Leader and Soloist The Orchestra, whose members are drawn from some of Britain’s leading orchestras, will present an exciting and varied programme commencing with Mendelssohn’s ‘Hebrides Overture’, ideas for which were brewing in the composer’s head during his visit to North Wales in 1829. Amyn Merchant, Leader of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, will then be the soloist in Mendelssohn’s scintillating Violin Concerto in E minor, which is widely 3 regarded as one of the greatest violin concertos of all time. Llandudno and District 6 7.30pm THE MARIAN CONSORT Rory McCleery – Director ‘In Paradisum – Music of Lamentation and Consolation.’ The Marian Consort presents a programme of music on the dual themes of lamentation and consolation, concepts which dominated religious discourse and sacred music in the 16 th century. Many of the works featured had very personal resonances for those who found themselves on the wrong side of political and religious divides during their lifetimes. These are complemented by a new piece from young composer Emily Levy, which juxtaposes texts from the Latin Requiem with poetry by the late American author André Debus. For this new work, the Consort will be joined by local singers in an exciting sound-world which draws on the music of the past. St. Mary’s Church is situated at the centre of the walled town of Conwy. It was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1186 and for a hundred years was the burial place of the Princes of Gwynedd. Since 1283, when Edward I began work on Conwy Castle, it has been the Parish Church. It contains many features of interest including a Tudor font and a magnificent rood screen of c. 1500. The other festival venues, St. Mary’s Church Hall and Tabernacle Chapel, are a few minutes’ walk from the Church. Signposted parking is available at various points in the vicinity, and the town is also served by a good local bus service and a railway station on the Chester to Holyhead line. On Sunday, July 19, the Amici del Canto choir will perform on the Quay between 5.30 and 6.30pm. From Monday to Saturday, the Castell Recorder Consort will perform on High Street between 2.15 and 4pm in aid of Tŷ Croeso, Glan Clwyd Hospital. On Thursday, July 23, Conwy Ensemble, our local community orchestra, invites concert-goers to hear them play anytime between 6.30 and 8.30pm at the Guildhall, Castle Square.
