The field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM)
image shows a GaN sunflowers developed in Prof. Yongfeng
Lu’s group. The structures were synthesized by a laserassisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LMOCVD) using the precursors trimethylgallium (TMGa) and
ammonia (NH3). A silicon substrate was heated to 600 ºC
using a CO2 laser beam at 20 watt and exposed to the
precursor gases for five minutes. The GaN deposition on Si
substrate resulted in the formation of nanosunflowers. The
average diameter of the sunflower is 800 nm. The image
was taken with a Hitachi 4700 FESEM at 18,000×
magnification.
