Make-Up Assignment for the Book Gallery If you are going to be absent on the book gallery day, here is your alternate assignment: Part 1—Essay Rather than creating a visual aid, you will be writing an essay exploring the connection between the two books. Begin with a brief summary of both books, and then write about the thematic/topic connection. Be sure to use specific detail from the book (with in-text citations). This should be approximately 1-1.5 pages long. Part II – Activity Create an activity to engage students in understanding your books. Consider the thematic connection between your books. Begin by answering the following question: What important message, idea, or understanding do you want your viewers to walk away from your exhibit with, and why? How will you help viewers arrive at this understanding? (For example, you might create a scavenger hunt, something to listen to or watch and react to, a game, a quiz, or a worksheet for participants to complete. Feel free to think outside the box, but be realistic about what participants will be able to do in the space.) Example: For To Kill a Mockingbird, maybe you bring in a variety of different shoes of various sizes – work boots, tap shoes, high heels, athletic shoes, etc. – and invite your classmates to walk around in them and then reflect on their experience by answering the following questions in their notebooks: What stereotypes are associated with these shoes? How would it feel to go through life with these stereotypes? How did it feel to take a walk in someone else’s shoes? What did you learn? Turn in the activity and a written explanation of how others would complete it/what you would like your classmates to get out of the activity.
