Career Fair The do’s and don’ts Before the Career Fair The $1,000,000 question: Why do you want to work for this company/industry? Go to www.asu.edu/career to review companies attending Research company websites, industry trends, job descriptions Take notes when researching companies to use at the career fair as a cheat sheet Use job descriptions to tailor your resumes to each company Submit on-line applications before attending on company website or www.asu.edu/career (if possible) Bring: (1) folder/portfolio with notes on companies (2) multiple resumes Practice 30 second commercial. Know yourself! During the Career Fair **First impressions made in the first 30 seconds** Mandatory attire is a business suit unless specified business casual Ladies: closed toed shoes, light on jewelry/makeup, keep PG rating (button up and comfortable fit) Gentlemen: straight tie, shoes and belt color match, sock and shoe color match, Everyone: shined shoes, light on perfume/cologne, fly up, shined shoes, iron, combed hair Firm handshake, good eye contact, straight posture Do not smoke before career fair or chew gum/mints during career fair Express enthusiasm for opportunity Focus Turn off cell phone when in the career fair area Use a Smart Phone (yours or a friend) or lap top outside career fair to learn about a company if you did not research but would like to meet Listen carefully and do not interrupt Go at the beginning (if you can) “Walk the course” – locate priority companies, review 30 sec. commercial and company research Deliver your 30 commercial and prepare for follow-up questions. Ex: What are you interested in? Have questions ready but mind recruiters time Get recruiter business card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they say no let them know you intended to follow-up with a thank you. After the Career Fair Send a thank you email. Keep it simple. Complete any online applications and email recruiters once finished Continue to build relationship through (email, info sessions, career fairs, clubs meetings) 30 second Commercial Hi, how are you?
