Ciência sem Fronteiras (Science Without Borders) DCU PhD Project Template: **Please use one form per project** Please complete & submit to your Head of School by Monday 16th July PI name & contact details: Pascal Landais School: Research Centre / group affiliation: School of Electronic Engineering, Dublin City University, Ireland. RF & Optical Communications Laboratory Research group / centre website: http://elm.eeng.dcu.ie/~opticlab/ PI website / link to CV: http://www.dcu.ie/info/staff_member.php?id_no=1042 Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max): My activities in the RF and optical comms laboratory are mostly focused on the generation of optical functions using semiconductor optical devices. We have an expertise in simulating, designing and characterising these nano-photonic devices. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Title: Study of quantum-dash Fabry-Pérot laser diode for all-optical clock recovery function in packet switching networks The project deals with the theoretical and experimental study of nano-scale active layer semiconductor lasers. From initial investigation these lasers have demonstrated great potential for all-optical clock recovery, which leads to all-optical data processing. The objectives of this project are to simulate the behaviour of this type of lasers in order to find their ultimate performances and to characterise their performance as an all-optical clock recovery function in a 320 Gb/s packet switching network. Key words: Nano-photonic material, semiconductor laser, optical communications, data processing, clock recovery Unique selling points of PhD project in DCU: DCU projects should offer something that’s not available in Brazil – specific equipment, multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research groups etc. Name & contact details for project queries, if different from PI named above: Please indicate the graduates of which disciplines that should apply: Electronic Engineering, Physics, Nano-material, ICTs Ciência sem Fronteiras / Science Without Borders Priority Area: Please indicate the specific programme priority area under which the proposed PhD project fits- choose only one (tick box): Engineering and other technological areas Pure and Natural Sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, chemistry) X Health and Biomedical Sciences Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) Aerospace Pharmaceuticals Oil, Gas and Coal Renewable Energy Minerals Biotechnology Nanotechnology and New Materials Technology of prevention and remediation of natural disasters Biodiversity and Bioprospection Marine Sciences Creative Industry New technologies in constructive engineering Please complete
