Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max):
Dr. Joseph Stokes has been research active in the area of Surface Engineering since
1997. His professional achievement includes the production of coated and free-standing
engineering components using the HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) process, other processes
include Atmospheric Plasma and Flame Thermal Spray (Only Thermal Spray facility in any
University/Institution in Ireland), including Tribological Assessment. Applications of his
research include: Wear Reduction, Bio-coatings for Implant Replacement Therapy, Oil and
Gas Protective Coatings to mention a few. He is an active member of the Centre for Medical
Engineering Research and the National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology (NCPST).
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Development of Surface Engineering Related Coatings for Wear-Corrosion-Erosion-Fatigue
Applications.
This project is concerned developing coatings with enhanced properties, by the
introductory of functional coatings to enhance and increase the life of components in
aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, plant industries. Thermal Spray and Anodizing
techniques may be applied onto components and extreme benefits have been
demonstrated in regards to the chemistry, mechanical function and environmental
response of components. However issues still occur in terms of Wear-Corrosion-ErosionFatigue performance and therefore these components can be researched and developed to
improve their performance and to extend their life. The research can be broken into many
smaller aspects to achieve this goal.
The project would involve experimental and/or finite element modally to achieve its
deliverables
Unique selling points of PhD project in DCU:
This is a collaboration between the DCU School of Mechanical and Manufacturing
Engineering and National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology. The unique attraction
of this research project is that DCU and the Supervisor runs the Only Thermal Spray facility
in any University/Institution in Ireland therefore the research is localised to this institution
and Industries who work in this area, with links to companies like Saudi Aramco in Saudi
Arabia etc.
