Summary:
Many homes around the world don’t have an emergency kit in their home. It is important for families to be prepared in case of an emergency. The first step for a family to do is to establish the risk their homes are vulnerable to. Then build a kit that focuses on providing support for this type of hazard. This proposal will demonstrate what to include and why it is important to have a kit. It will also suggest resources families can utilize to facilitate their recovery before a disaster happens. I will complete the reference manual by April 30. Then I will present the reference manual. We can review it and make correction as necessary. Once this is done I will have a finished copy by May 5.
Problems with Homes Owners not Being Prepared
Most homes are subject to a hazard whether the home owner realizes it or not. Many owners choose to simply ignore the present dangers, or they believe that they will not be the ones affected by these dangers. Disasters, for the most part, are not planned. They happen at different times without warning. Often times they cause mass destruction that devastate a large community such as a town or a large metropolis. Emergency kits are not seen as necessary, this creates greater chaos in times of response after a disaster. With so many citizens not prepared this endangers the whole community. It rations the supplies that are being brought in from disaster relief agencies. It causes a state of chaos as people are evacuating cities. Many people do not have food or water for their families. To raise awareness I will include the following in this manual
Identify potential hazards and dangers
Put together an emergency kit
Organize a safety plan for disasters
Establish Vulnerability
Due to the nature of randomness, the most common citizens can do is prepare themselves with the proper gear to be able to handle whatever such disasters can bring. Along with essential tools, they should keep themselves informed with public shelters and evacuation routs that are given by their city’s emergency management office. The most evident problem is that most people are not aware of all the information needed. I hope that this will give them all insight they need to be able prepare themselves.

Proposed Solution: Reference Manual and Guidelines
The proposed reference manual will be able to provide home owners with guidelines and reference to be able to
Identify potential hazards and dangers
Put together an emergency kit
Organize a safety plan for disasters
Establish Vulnerability
I will write the reference manual with the knowledge and experience I have in this area. I will also use the reference found on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website to provide support for my guidelines for technical information. The reference manual will include the following sections.
Mitigation Strategies
Establish the Risk o Natural Hazards
Earthquake
Tornado
Hurricane
Wild Fires o Man-Made Hazards
Nuclear Power Plant
Airports
Chemical and Biological
Terrorism o Vulnerability
Elderly
Children
Homeless
Special Needs
Disabilities

Staying Informed
I will have a rough draft completed by April 30. We can review it and discuss any changes that should be made. When satisfied then I will complete the final by May 10.
Conclusion
I am excited to see the results after completing this reference manual. I hope it will help many home owners when preparing their homes for potential disasters. I look forward to fixing this problem.
