What’s New in Classified Staff
Dan Rocheleau, Arboretum Project Coordinator is leaving the University; JoAnne Feeney recently joined the
Outreach office as a USA 2; Liz Hessler of NEW Partnership for Children and Families shared that they will soon
be starting a sub department in her area and will be hiring a 50% program assistant type position that will go full
time after the first of the year.
CSAC Website
Paul Wikgren will be working this week on updating the Fall Conference page to include 2009 information. He
would also like to re-do the recycling page.
Newsletter
No new updates. The September issue will follow soon and hope to do quarterly after that. It was suggested that
the classified staff receive the newsletter about two weeks before the rest of campus so revisions can be made if
necessary. This will start after the September issue.
Professional Development Funds
These funds come from the provost and we have not yet been notified of our allocation or if there will be funds
available.

Fall Conference 2009
Yes, there will be one on October 2, 2009. Kudos to Terry and Micky Doyle for all their hard work. Invitations
and brochures will go out this week. Jan Snyder has a list of off campus participants of the past that will receive
the invitation. HR will also send it to other HR representatives hoping they will help spread the word. The cost is
$59/person which should still generate a small profit. The two main speakers are Phil Clampitt (Gender
Communication) and Todd Sanders (Social Media). Presenters are Mary Ann Rose, Mark Roe and Deb
Anderson. Members may be notified as the date approaches of ways they can assist such as working the
registration table, assembling folders, etc.
CSAC Brochure
 Still in a holding pattern. Might it be possible to get something ready for the Fall Conference?
Recycling
 Printer Cartridge
o Seems to be going well. Filled bins should be emptied in a box in Amy’s office.
Fundraisers
 Shorewood Lunches
o The fund raiser is done, seemed to be a success. It will take a few weeks to see what was
generated in terms of funds.
Going Green Sub-Committee
Monika Pynaker reported that the committee met yesterday and came up with a few ideas furthering the group
efforts. A list of ideas will be presented to the group for input on ranking them. The subcommittee will begin
moving forward on the first one or two of the list. Other ideas are welcome but they provided a few items they
came up with:
 Scrap Metal: The current policy is the scrap metal goes to Smitty’s. Facilities used to pick up on campus
but they no longer do that so some departments have been throwing it away. It was suggested that there
be one pick up location on campus where facilities could come periodically and pick up the scrap metal
and get it off to Smitty’s. It is unclear if there is a payment for the scrap metal.
 Aluminum cans – What happens to the aluminum cans on campus? It was suggested that some on
campus believe the custodians take them however, what happens to the money? Is there money involved?
 Recycle Bins – get color coded recycle bins that are uniform across campus, or be sure they are clearly
labeled.
 Refillable Containers – It was suggested A ‘Viands be approached about the idea of refillable beverage
containers, soup bowls, etc. It would be designed for such use and not break down.
 Reuse of Paper – An awareness campaign to re-use paper by writing on the second side (though cannot be
run through a printer a second time). It was suggested that perhaps DigiCopy could make note pads out
of the paper for free or a discounted price. The burden of separating scrap paper from paper containing
confidential information would fall on the department. A clear definition of “confidential” would have to
be communicated.
 Surplus sales – any way to bring them back? They will likely not come back since the Shipping and
Receiving Clerk position (Jose) has not been replaced.
 New telecommuting policy – promote telecommuting as a way to keep cars off the road, save on energy,
etc. A common complaint may be “X person needs to be on campus” but the group would try to change
that mindset. Though the union does allow for a flexible work schedule (with supervisor approval), we
would be promoting it in terms of “going green.”
 Continue to encourage the use of electronic communication (emails, website, etc.)

Other
 Brown Bag Lunches: One idea was to start with presenters who were not chosen for the Fall Conference
and the CSAC could sponsor a Brown Bag Lunch Series. Terry did offer that to some who offered to
present at the Fall Conference and it seemed well received.

It was suggested that we invite Chancellor Harden and Provost Wallace to one of our meetings. Terry
offered to check with Paula to see if Chancellor Harden would be available to speak briefly at the Fall
Conference.
Next meeting
Thursday, October 8, 2009
10:30AM -- 11:30AM
MAC 301 – Vista Conference Room
[Historically, the October meeting is held at Lambeau Cottage.
This year that will not be the case. Members seem to have
busy work schedules making it more difficult to make it to
a location farther away from their office.]
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Bartelme
On Behalf of Teri Ternes, Council Secretary
