Purpose
Research Project
Name _______________________
The purpose of this research project is for students to obtain an in depth knowledge about an injury. Students
will have to become familiar with the anatomy of the region of the body, the common mechanisms of injuries
and sports where injury occurs, as well as other injuries that occur at the region of the body they choose.
This project is intended to be a semester long research project. Students will turn in parts of the project
throughout the semester to be graded and feedback given. They will turn in the final project on MAY 17th.
Posters will be presented to faculty members the following week.

Guidelines
This project will consist of three parts. You will turn in a written essay, a tri-fold display, and give a
presentation. The components of each part are defined below.
Written Essay:
Anatomy Review
Common Mechanisms of
Injuries
Common Sports
Differential Diagnosis
Predisposing Factors
Evaluation
Diagnostic Testing
Treatment/Course of Action
Rehabilitation
Conclusions
Discuss the anatomy of this region of the body. What type of joint(s) is/are
found there? What are some major anatomical landmarks? What muscles act on
the body area? What nerves can be found there?
How is this body area typically injured?
In what sports is this body area commonly injured?
Describe various injuries that occur at this body area. What are their signs and
symptoms and mechanisms of injury?
What factors predispose an athlete to an injury of this body area?
Describe the evaluation process from an athletic training perspective. What
would you discover in the history, inspection, and palpation and what special
tests would you perform to evaluate this injury?
Describe any radiographs or diagnostic testing that are conducted to diagnose
this injury or condition.
Explain the treatment options or the course of action taken for this injury
Describe any rehabilitation techniques that one would use to rehabilitate an
individual suffering from this condition or injury.
What should we learn from the research you have conducted? What are the
future implications?

Tri-Fold Display:
At least 5 sources should be used in your research and cited using APA format.

Conclusions
Include a labeled diagram of the body area.
List the sports where this body area is commonly injured.
List the common injuries that occur at this body area.
What radiographs or diagnostic testing is used to diagnose this injury.
List the treatment options or course of action to be taken for this injury.
What should be learned from the research you have conducted? What are the
future implications?
Presentation:
Professional Dress
Students are expected to dress professionally on the presentation day. NO
JEANS. Not even “dressy” jeans.
Clarity of Presentation
Students are able to clearly convey the information they discovered in their
research.
Ability to Answer Questions Students are able to answer any questions that an audience member may have.
