LIBRARY NEWSLETTER TAKOMA PARK/SILVER SPRING CAMPUS Volume 16, Issue 1 Fall 2014 Library Renovation! During the summer, the Library was part of the renovation for the new ventilation system in the Resource Center and a brand new carpet was installed on the lower level of the library. During the renovation we kept our hours and our ability to serve the students! We will have an open house October 21st from 8:30-11:30. We hope you can stop in to see the new look and learn more about our Collaborative Workstation. There will be Coffee & Pastries! Collaborative Workstation Now Available in Library! The three libraries now each have a collaborative workstation to assist students in group study. The collaborative workstation allows students to view online material from their laptops on a big screen as a group. To view the video created by the Faculty Service librarians showing how to use the collaborative workstation, go to Faculty Services on the Library Web page and click the link Professional Development. Also included is the transcript of the video and a handout. Check out our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/mclibraries MC Libraries’ Online Tutorials & Quizzes Almost 3,000 MC Library tutorial quizzes were submitted by Takoma Park students this past academic year! The majority of those were from the Academic Integrity & Avoiding Plagiarism tutorial, but students also completed many of our other tutorials. If you would like your students to receive a basic introduction to research skills and using the MC Libraries’ resources, please encourage them to complete an online tutorial. The full list of our online tutorials includes an introduction to the research process (Begin Your Research) and a tutorial on evaluating information. Most tutorials end with a quiz, which students can email to you for credit or just to confirm completion. All of the MC Libraries’ online tutorials are aligned with the competencies in the College’s Information Literacy rubric, developed by the General Education and Outcomes Assessment committees. For more information please contact Jenny Hatleberg at jennifer.hatleberg@montgomerycollege.edu Customized Library Instruction Sessions Do you want your students to have a more customized introduction to library research than our tutorials provide? MC librarians offer library instruction sessions that take place during your regular class time. At your request, we will introduce library resources that students will need to complete a specific assignment. For more information or to arrange a session, please contact me at jennifer.hatleberg@montgomerycollege.edu or fill out the online Instruction Request Form Distance Education & Library Resources Are you teaching an online section of a course this semester or in the future? Do your online students need to do assignments or write papers that require research? The Library can provide similar instruction on research skills for online students as we can for on-campus students. If you would like to discuss ways of incorporating Library instruction into your online course, contact Jenny Hatleberg (240-567-1685; jennifer.hatleberg@montgomerycollege.edu).
