Berkovitz, MD to lead OSF Cardiovascular Service Line I am pleased to share with you that Dr. Ken Berkovitz has accepted the position of Senior Clinical Vice President for the OSF Cardiovascular Service Line and will be reporting to me. His first day with OSF will be May 5, 2015. He will be replacing Dr. Don McElroy, who retired at the beginning of this year. Dr. Berkovitz is currently the President of Summa Cardiovascular Institute, which includes the cardiovascular service line for Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. He has been leading their service line since 2008 as the Chair and Medical Director. His broad-based experience will serve him well in his new position here at OSF in light of his success with developing new programs and services with exceptional clinical excellence; physician recruitment and contracting; system service line budgeting; philanthropic development; organizational strategic planning; and balanced score card development. When asked about coming to OSF HealthCare, Dr. Berkovitz said, “I am interested in new opportunities and wanted to be in a culture that is committed to being at the forefront of cardiovascular services. It was obvious and reassuring to me that everyone I met at OSF was committed to advancing health, which is at the core of the OSF HealthCare Vision to lead in the transformation of health care by improving the lives of those served.” CEO Kevin Schoeplein looks forward to Dr. Berkovitz’s arrival, “We are pleased to have such a talented and experienced physician executive as Dr. Berkovitz lead our OSF Cardiovascular Service Line. His commitment to clinical excellence will certainly help us in our efforts to ensure the most advanced heart care, from wellness to treatment options, is offered throughout the many communities of patients our Ministry serves.” Dr. Berkovitz is an interventional cardiologist with more than 20 years of clinical experience and 10 years of administrative experience for Summa, a large integrated health care system. His efforts have been recognized nationally by the American Heart Association nine times since 2006, including in 2012 with a Gold Award for the AHA Mission Lifeline (STEMI) Quality Achievement Award. From 1999 through 2004, Summa Akron City Hospital was among the Top 50 Heart Hospitals according to US News and World Report. He earned his B.S. in biology from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. He graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tenn. with his medical degree. Dr. Berkovitz completed his residency training in internal medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Ind. He is board certified in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Berkovitz has co-authored articles in professional cardiology journals including the American Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Invasive Cardiology. For the past seven years, he has been on the Board of Directors for the local chapter of the American Heart Association and since 2003 he’s been a member of the SummaCare/Summa Insurance Company Board of Directors.
