Tony Avellino, MD, MBA Joins OSF as CEO of Neuroscience Service Line and Illinois
Neurological Institute
OSF HealthCare and the Illinois Neurological Institute are pleased to welcome Tony Avellino,
MD, MBA as the new CEO of the OSF Neuroscience Service Line and the Illinois Neurological
Institute. His first day with OSF was August 18, 2014.
As the new CEO he will lead the Neuroscience Service Line across our geographic care delivery
area. “I am honored to be a part of the OSF family as its mission, vision, philosophy and values
very much align with mine. It is a great privilege to help lead and integrate the OSF
Neuroscience Service Line and the Illinois Neurological Institute throughout the OSF Ministry to
provide world-class, affordable, and high quality neuroscience adult and pediatric care,” said Dr.
Avellino.
Dr. Avellino comes to OSF HealthCare from the University of Washington (UW) where he’s
been since 2003, serving most recently as the Director of UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute
and Chief of Neurological Surgery at UW Medical Center. In 2009, he became the first director
of the UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute where he was responsible for consolidating and
integrating neuroscience programs across the UW Medicine Health System. In addition, he had
major responsibilities for the development of the charter, inventory, and strategic work plans of
the Neurosciences Institute’s 18 focus areas which closely parallel those he will lead in his new
capacity with OSF.
Prior to leading the UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute, Dr. Avellino was the Chief of
Pediatric Neurosurgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital from 2007-2009. More recently, he has
also been the Chief of Neurological Surgery at UW Medical Center for the past three years
where he has been responsible for the overall operations, evaluation and development of the
neurological surgery service including faculty recruitments.
Dr. Avellino replaces Dr. Patrick Elwood who retired from the CEO position this past spring
after 53 years, the past 13 years as INI CEO. Dr. Daniel Fassett has served as interim CEO since
March.
