[Classification of Books using DDC]
Handout

Books are arranged in Muktangan School Libraries according to their SUBJECTS

SUBJECTS are given Code Numbers from Dewey Decimal Classification Schedule (DDC)

These CODE NUMBERS are also called CLASS NUMBERS

The CLASS NUMBERS are always 3 DIGIT Numbers

All the subjects are divided into 10 MAIN CLASSES ( meaning 10 BROAD SUBJECTS)

The 10 MAIN CLASSES representing 10 BROAD Subjects in DDC are given below

Each MAIN CLASS (Broad Subjects) is again divided into a 100 SUBCLASSES
(i.e. 100 divisions of the subjects)

100 SUBCLASSES are again divided into 1000 SUB SECTIONS ( which are sections of the
same subclass)

The 1000 SUBCLASSES are again divided into numerous narrow subjects using Decimals
For eg.
[Main Class- 500 = Science / Sub Class- 590= Zoology /
Sub Section- 599 = Mammals / 599.1= Kangaroos]

Books are given the 3 digit Class nos. according to their subjects

Thus for multiple BOOKS on the same SUBJECT Class nos will be the same

For eg. All books on ‘ Science experiments’ will have the same no. 502

So in such a case books are arranged according to the Class no. + Author mark which is the
1st 3 letters of the surname of the author. Eg. 502/ Aga , 502/Cha / 502/Meh etc.

Religion (men’s faith)
Social Sciences (how people live and work in society; Law, Government, Sociology,
Economics , Education, Politics, Customs, Transport etc.)
Language (English &other Languages , Grammar and Dictionaries
Natural Science (Mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology,
paleontology, biology, zoology, and botany)
Technology and Applied Science (medicine, engineering, agriculture and related
topics)
Fine Arts and Recreation (architecture, sculpture, Drawing & painting, music,
photography and recreation like Sports, Handicrafts etc.
Literature (plays, poems, essays, literature in foreign languages)

History and Biography (history, biography, geography and other related disciplines)
