1. Course Description
The course presents an introduction to Malay language through the learning of basic grammar and
essential vocabulary to enable students to understand and communicate in simple Malay.
2. Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with competence in understanding and using basic Malay. In order to
familiarize students with the target language, the requisite skills of listening, speaking, reading and
writing will be taught, along with the rudiments of grammar. These are achieved through thematic and
scenario-based learning which will equip students with the necessary vocabulary based on the prescribed
themes.
3. Learning Outcome
Upon completing the course, students should be able to:
 Have a basic understanding of speech sounds in Malay
 Understand basic grammar rules in Malay
 Understand basic spoken and written Malay;
 Read, speak and write simple Malay in order to understand and convey messages.

5. Student Assessment
Students will be assessed based on continual assessment administered throughout the course. The
continual assessment is made up of five components which comprise grammar, comprehension,
composition, oral and participation.
