The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic
competition for teams of high school students. Each
high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or
Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C"
or Varsity students.

The SkyHawk Band Program offers many instrumental
ensembles and color guard activities for students to
participate in. These ensembles include the Concert
Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Combo
1 & 2, Beginning Band, Indoor Drum Line, SkyHawk
Color Guard, and the SkyHawk Winter Guard.

Bowling Club is an organization designed to allow Skutt
Catholic students to bowl competitively against
students from other schools from all over Nebraska. The
club is open to all students of Skutt Catholic who share
a desire to bowl competitively and a dedication to
improve their own personal bowling aptitude.
Cheerleading: Contact, Beckie Rago

The cheerleading program consists of up to two squads
(depending on the number of students who try-out)
formed to support the Skutt Catholic High School
athletic teams. The Junior Varsity squad consists of 9th
- 11th graders who cheer at home Junior Varsity events.
The Varsity squad consists of 9th - 12th graders. This
squad cheers on a rotational basis at football games,
boys and girls basketball games, and volleyball matches.
If numbers on the team allow, a separate wrestling
cheer squad will be formed to cheer at wrestling events.
Both teams compete at local competitions, and the
varsity team also competes at regional and national
level competitions. Requirements and details about
tryouts are included in the cheerleading packet given at
the initial tryout meeting.

The Chess Club gives students an opportunity to play
friendly games of chess against their peers in a lowstress environment. Students of all levels are welcome
to come, as help is given to those who need it. Chess
variants are sometimes played.

Color Guard members get the opportunity to
experience spinning flags, rifles, and sabers while
creating visual and theatrical effects to marching band
performances. In 2011, the color guard founded the
Skutt Catholic Winter Guard, allowing the color guard
members to compete with other guard units
throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

Dance team includes competition, performance dance,
and promoting school spirit with dance. Dance is usually
a year-round sport, performing in competitions and at
sporting events, most commonly football and basketball
games. Some schools also have their dance team
perform short sideline dances. Traditionally, dance
teams also perform at school pep rallies.

The Skutt Catholic Theatre Department annually
produces three full-length productions: a Fall musical, a
Winter play, and a Spring play. The students engage
themselves in all aspects of each of these productions
including acting, stage management, scenic, light and
sound design, set construction, advertising, properties
design, costuming and make-up, and running crew.

Students can apply to be an EMHC or Lector at the end
of their Sophomore year. If selected, students are
required to attend the Archdiocesan Training Session,
Mandation Liturgy, and a training at Skutt Catholic at
the beginning of the school year.

The Skutt Catholic Engineering Team is focused on
stimulating students’ interest and excitement in
engineering, architecture, and related sciences. The
Engineering Team participates in the Student Mentoring
Program (SMP), a program co-sponsored by The Society
of American Military Engineers (SAME) and The Peter
Kiewit Institute (PKI).

FBLA is organized to encourage members to participate
in activities designed to facilitate intelligent career
choices, develop business skills, teach the value of
community responsibility, and strengthen selfconfidence. Chapter activities usually fall into these five
categories: Professional, Service, Civic, Financial, and
Social.

Habitat is about more than swinging a hammer. We rely

The International Thespian Society (ITS) is the
Educational Theatre Association’s student honorary
organization. ITS recognizes the achievements of high
school and middle school theatre students. Since 1929,
EdTA has inducted more than 2 million Thespians into
ITS. That number continues to grow, with more than
36,000 students from around the country being
inducted each year. Students earn points towards
induction based upon the number of hours they work
on productions and the cast/crew role they fill.

Ministry Council meets weekly on Wednesdays
immediately after school in the Campus Ministry Office.
The group is charged with planning and helping with
liturgies, prayer services, service projects, and Catholic
Schools Week.

Each year, a case packet is distributed to all
participating schools in late August. Tryouts are held
before the case is distributed. The case packet is a
series of documents including the charges, penal code,
stipulations, case law, and jury instructions as well as all
of the exhibits and witness statements. During a mock
trial, competitors are restricted to only the materials
provided in the case packet and may not reference any
outside sources. In order to prepare for competition,
teams thoroughly read and analyze the case packet.

The National Art Honor Society is a National
organization for high school students, for the purpose
of inspiring and recognizing those students who have
shown an outstanding ability in art and a willingness to
share those abilities with their school community and
beyond. Students must be in Art II or above and carry a
B average in their Art classes.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's
premier organization established to recognize
outstanding junior and senior high school students.
More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor wellrounded students who have demonstrated excellence in
the areas of Character, Leadership, Scholarship and
Service.

The Newspaper Club publishes the Flightline every
month. We have a set of editors, staff writers and
photographers that go to various events and conduct
interviews with people around the school to publish our
newspaper.
Operation Others: Contact, Julie Schmitz

Operation Others provides food assistance to families at
Christmas and educates others about food insecurity in
our community in order to encourage a preferential
option for the poor. Skutt Catholic students partner
with students from area Catholic High Schools
to provide over 1,600 Omaha families with two weeks’
worth of food during the Christmas season.
Poetry Out Loud: Contact, Sheri Hoye

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest which
begins with each student choosing one poem from over
600 selections at poetryoutloud.org. Students compete
at the classroom level with qualifying scores moving on
to the school competition. Once the school produces
one winner, that student then moves on to the regional
contest and then to state. The state winner then
proceeds to the national competition. Skutt Catholic
has qualified for the state competition every year it has
competed.

Poetry Slam (Louder Than a Bomb) is a national
movement for students to write and perform their own
work in public. It "'is a friendly competition that
emphasizes self-expression and community via poetry,
oral story-telling and hip-hop spoken word. It focuses
on cooperation, with teams of students working
together to write, revise, and rehearse their
performances." Skutt Catholic students attend writing
sessions on campus after school to begin their work and
shape their ideas into powerful performances.

Supports students who have a passion for strength
training beyond the normal sports based movements.
This group attends local and state competitions.

Prevention Council is an SC organization that is
dedicated to preventing dangerous and unhealthy
behaviors in students, including underage drinking, drug
use, bullying, suicide, dating violence, and eating
disorders. Prevention Council plans all activities during
Red Ribbon Week, April’s Drug and Alcohol Awareness
Activities, our Suicide Prevention program, Youth
Frontiers events, and other school wide prevention
efforts throughout the year. There are varying levels of
involvement, so even the most active SCHS student can
be a member.

Retreat leaders help our students further develop their
spirituality and relationships with God, their families
and classmates. Each retreat leader has a specific
position within the retreat which complements the
major events happening for the grade level attending.

Robotics utilizes a STEM curriculum (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math) to educate the
students about how to apply robotics to solve a realworld problem. This is accomplished as the students
design and build a robot to accomplish objectives that
have been developed into a game expressed through a
competition format. In addition to the STEM focus,
robotics teaches other real world skills such as
teamwork, problem solving, volunteerism, and other
life skills. The students in this program will be the
scientists and engineers of the future. The Skutt
Catholic Robotics Team meets after school and in the
evenings, and competes against other high schools in
local, regional, and national tournaments throughout
the school year.

SkyHawks for Life is a club that exists to promote the
Gospel of Life on our campus. We are students and
faculty that believe in the sanctity and dignity of every
human being from conception to natural death. We
meet twice a month to discuss life issues and to plan
our upcoming activities which include peacefully
praying in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic on
Maple Street, a pro-life prayer service to be held in
January, and fundraising for our annual trip to
Washington D.C. for the March for Life.

A ‘service trip’ within Omaha! Students are invited to
immerse themselves in a weekend of service in our own
backyard. We will partner with organizations such as
Habitat for Humanity, Open Door Mission, the Heart
Ministry Center, plus more! This trip will be completely
led and organized by SC Faculty and Staff.

Student lead spirit group that helps get the student
body and crowd excited for Skutt Catholic Activities and
Athletics. Comes up with game themes and

Science Quiz Bowl is a fast-paced, verbal competition in
all areas of science. Students enjoy the content, the
camaraderie, and the jeopardy-like format.

The Skutt Catholic Team is open to all students
regardless of previous experience. It is our philosophy
that forensics should be open to any student who is
interested and willing to work hard. Students have the
opportunity to participate in 11 different speech events
and two different forms of debate.

Singers at Skutt Catholic High School have a wide
variety of choices and opportunities in the choir
department. We offer two curricular ensembles:
Concert Choir and Vivace show choir. These choirs
meet on a set schedule during the school day. We
also have three additional ensembles: Music
Ministry, Musettes (a women’s a cappella group),
and Hawakpella (a men’s a cappella group). These
groups meet on a variable schedule.
Skutt Catholic Student Advisory Board is a
representative organization, through which students
can become involved in the affairs of the school,
working in partnership with school management, staff
and parents for the benefit of the school and its
students. The student advisory board helps share
students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers
and school principals. They often also help raise funds
for school-wide activities, including social events,
community projects and school reform.

Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota
Youthworks is an interdenominational non-profit
organization providing life-changing, Christ-centered
youth mission opportunities. Students participate in
service, community building, faith sharing, reflection,
cultural programs, and evening activities.

No shooting experience necessary to begin participating
in the fastest growing sport in Nebraska where you
compete as an individual and as a 5 person squad.
Develop your skills at breaking blue rock with a 12
gauge shotgun. All skill levels compete in the many
shooting venues. This is a co-ed sport where girls shoot
competitively with the boys.

The Yearbook Club carries on the tradition of recording
and publishing a chronicle of the school year by

The Skutt Catholic Boys tennis program is an open
program for any boy that would like to participate in
grades 9-12. We compete in the River Cities Conference
and have achieved great success. Official practice
begins in mid-August. A summer program is
encouraged for all players as well.

Girl’s golf is held during the Fall. Five players participate
on the varsity golf team and five play on the JV team.
Usually there are 15-16 total members on the team and
everyone on the team gets the experience of playing in
at least one tournament.

Cross Country is a fall sport for both boys and girls. Our
sport has a no-cut policy; however, we do compete at
both the Varsity and JV levels. The mission of the
SkyHawk Cross Country program is to develop the Godgiven abilities of each student-athlete to their greatest
potential. Individual and team achievement is an
important outcome accomplished through a personal
dedication to continuous improvement. Studentathletes in the program are expected to commit fully to
individual hard work and to an unwavering dedication
to the team.

The Football team is an open program for any male
students that would like to participate in grades 9-12.
There are three levels of competition: Varsity, Junior
Varsity, and 9th Grade. The 9th grade program will
practice separately from the varsity and junior varsity.
The football program has had great success achieving
high rankings and playoff appearances regularly.
Practice begins in early August and runs through mid
November, and also includes a summer weight and
conditioning session as well.
The Skutt Catholic softball program is a fall sport. It
begins in early August and is complete by the middle of
October. It is open to girls in grades 9-12 with all levels
of ability. We have both Junior Varsity and Varsity
teams that compete in the River Cities Conference. Our
season schedule is mixed between Class A and Class B
competition. Players are encouraged to prepare for high
school softball by playing summer softball.

The Volleyball Program has 4 different teams: Varsity,
Junior Varsity, Reserve, and Freshman. The mission of
the Volleyball Program is to develop the most well
rounded student athlete who will be leaders in the
community as well as on the court. The individuals in
the program learn the benefits of teamwork, self
discipline, personal responsibility, setting high
standards individually and as a team, and the joy of
achievement. Practice begins in early August and runs
through mid November, and also includes a summer
weight and conditioning session as well.
Winter Sports

The Boys Basketball program consists of five different
teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Reserve, Freshman A,
and Freshman B. We encourage all male students
interested in playing competitive basketball to try out
for the team. Athletics is one of the best ways to learn
important life skills and our staff believes in teaching
hard work, teamwork, and the fundamentals of
basketball.

The Swimming and Diving Team combines with Mount
Michael to help any interested student improve their
techniques while competing against schools across the
state. The team is open to athletes (boys and girls) of all
levels and is a great way to get in shape for a spring
sport or make swimming your primary sport.

The Wrestling Program has three levels: Freshmen,
Junior Varsity and Varsity. The Wrestling Program has
won 15 Class B state titles, one state dual title and has
finished as Class B runner-up once. The Varsity team
travels to many out of state regional and national
tournaments. Official practice begins in November, and
the winter season runs through February.

The Skutt Catholic Baseball program is an open program
for any boy that would like to participate in baseball
that is in grades 9-12. We compete in the very
competitive River Cities Conference, and have had great
success in conference, district, and state tournaments.
Official tryouts start in March, and the spring baseball
season runs through the end of May. SkyHawk Baseball
Association (SBA) also runs a summer baseball program
with Reserves, Junior Legion and Senior Legion baseball
teams from the end of May till the end of July.

Boys golf is held during the spring. Five players play
Varsity Golf and five play on the JV team. Usually there
