Major Concentration in International Development Studies (36 Credits)
Stream III: Culture & Society
The courses in this stream focus on how the social structures, history, and culture of populations affect developmental
processes. Associations, class, gender, religion, race, and ethnicity, for example, all shape development in multiple and diverse
ways. Moreover, present developmental processes oftentimes cannot be adequately understood without considering history.
Culture, in turn, is increasingly recognized within development studies as both a determinant and a constitutive element of
development. In exploring all three, the courses in this stream provide important insight into the complex and varied
relationship between social context and development.

Program Rules & Policies: READ & FOLLOW VERY CAREFULLY (These rules apply to the entire 36 credits for the Major
Concentration in IDS Stream III)



Discipline Rule: In their complete program, students can take a maximum of 12 credits from any one discipline; and must
complete a minimum of 9 credits each from two disciplines.
 Example: A discipline is Economics (ECON), International Development Studies (INTD), Anthropology (ANTH) etc.
Students, regardless of which Stream they have chosen, will have Economics as their first discipline of 9 credits.
This is because there are 9 credits of Required Economics courses in all Streams. It is the student’s responsibility
to make sure to complete 9 credits from a second discipline, from within their Stream options.
Level Rule: At least 18 of the 36 credits must be at the 300 level or above. In the final year (U3), no program courses
may be taken below the 300 level.
Substitution Options: Are courses that are found to have relevant content applicable to the IDS program and particular
theme of the Stream; and that are not currently listed in the IDS program but that are currently being reviewed by the
Faculty for official addition to the program/stream. A current list of the Stream's Substitutions can be fou nd under
