Track & Field Warriors Hold Off HP in
District #113 Duel for 7th Year In A Row
For the last 50 years on the 2nd week in March the Deerfield and Highland Park Boys Track &
Field Teams compete in the District #113 Indoor Track & Field Meet. Although this meet is very
early in the season it is very important as team and District pride are on the line as the winner
receives the Traveling Trophy. The meet demands great character, effort, and intensity as both
teams simply go at each other on another level. We always tell the boys that if you compete in
this meet you will get better as it will bring out the very best in you and your competitor. This
meet lived up to those expectations once again as Highland Park came out with a lot of
intensity and demanded that DHS match it from the first event to the last event . Deerfield was
down a few athletes on the Varsity level and had to have many Warriors step up and they did
just that by beating HP 66-57 for a very close 9pt victory. The guts the boys showed speaks to
the hard work and desire they have been training with everyday. The Traveling Trophy was a
nice reward for their hard work as they continue to focus towards our ultimate Team goals in
May, but for 2012 the trophy stays RED!
Congrats Varsity!
The F/S were HUGE underdogs in this meet and the coaches were looking for the boys to take
their competitive approach to meets to another level. The F/S had their best meet of the year
but lost to HP 66-57. This ended an 8 year winning streak against HP, but even though this is a
loss, the boys gave it everything they had and know that there is a lot of season left to improve
and develop some team depth and identity. The coaches were extremely proud of the fight the
boys showed and rose to the challenge and almost pulled off a big upset. If the boys continue t
learn how to compete at that level there will be great things in May for these young Warriors.
Special mention goes to SR Danny Katz as he tied the HP Indoor Field House Low Hurdle Record
of 6.6 held by Aaron Moorhead of Deerfield in 1998.
He also broke the HP Indoor Triple Jump Field House Record of 43’6 held by HP in 1999 with a
jump of 43’8” Congrats Danny!
