Meantime Guide: Sharing the “Big” Picture Develop a vision of competency based medical education – the “big picture” by defining what Competence by Design means locally for your learning program. Rationale Competence by Design is the Royal College’s change initiative to transform residency education and assessment practices including the exam process, the residency accreditation and credentialing system, and continuing professional development. This competency-based approach is not only transforming the way we teach medical education, it is changing our performance expectations of learners. CBD is intended to enhance the abilities of graduates and the patient care they provide in residency and throughout their practice lifetime. In order to inspire our colleagues to give time, support and energy to a change initiative as complex and as challenging as CBD, we must promote understanding and embracing the vision for the change. This action will help you define a local vision of CBD that shows why CBD is necessary and what the benefits are for you, your staff and colleagues personally and for your residency program overall. Steps 1. Start a dialogue Invite local CBD champion(s) to host a face-to-face CBD dialogue and share the rationale for CBD: o What is competency based medical education (CBME) and how does Competence by Design (CBD) support this educational concept? o Why change? What needs to change? o What outcomes do we want? o What are the impacts on people and the program? o Who are the target audiences? Invite colleagues to develop talking points about CBME and to engage in discussions about how CBD supports physicians learning throughout their career Tweet your findings or post talking points on LinkedIn & Facebook 2. Improve your knowledge and skills as a CBD Champion Read our CBD Rationale Attend a free CBD webinar Download the Big Pictures from Collaborating to Draw the Big Picture: Discussions around Competency-Based CPD Watch the Video: What excites you about CBD? o Identify one aspect of CBD that excites you to take action for change Invite an expert to rounds © 2015 The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Facilitate peer-to-peer conversations about the coming changes Champion how CBD/CBME can better address the educational needs of learners Help others understand the need for change by sharing examples from CBD champions 4. Build your CBD network Develop forums/mechanisms to build your local CBD network Create a series of CBD dialogues (meetings, town halls, web discussions, blogs, videos) that disseminate concepts of CBME and CBD throughout your residency program Incorporate facilitated breakout sessions (or online equivalent) to allow people to interact with CBD and to provide feedback 5. Become an advocate for CBME and CBD Coach people about CBME (in collaboration with local CBD champions supported by the Royal College): o To personalize the change o To embody and share the CBD vision o To enrol and engage others 6. Practise new behaviours Share and make explicit the CBD Design directions, emphasizing and role modelling new behaviours for others Tap into Royal College resources to encourage people to begin practising these new behaviours now and to share any current practices which are aligned with the new behaviours Resources Royal College leaders and champions as coaches and mentors CBD tools and resources CBD Community Touchpoint Webinars Video: What is the value of CBD?
