Chauncey Harris* Peripheral Model

Chauncey Harris’ Peripheral Model
• Peripheral Model (similar to Urban Realms)
– Urban area =
• Inner CBD
• Suburbs (different income levels) surround CBD
(these suburbs turn into..?)
• Offices, malls, etc. mixed in to service people
• All tied together by “BELTWAYS”
• Density gradient (amount of land
& people on it) decreases as
distance from CBD increases
- extensive v. intensive
• Benefits from suburban life?
–
–
–
–
Less crime
Better education
More individual space (large house, yard, garage)
Less traffic
• Problems?
– Urban sprawl
– Creates segregation (zoning laws)
Peripheral Model of Urban Areas
The central city is surrounded by a ring road (beltway), around which
are suburban areas and edge cities, shopping malls, office parks,
industrial areas, and service complexes.
Urban Styles Around the World
American v. European cities
– Rich Americans → suburbs
– Rich Europeans → CBD w/ rural country homes
– Poor Americans → city in low density, dispersed
government housing (less funded over time)
– Poor Europeans → “high density” suburbs near
the city (high-rise subsidized housing concentrations of poor people create MAJOR
problems)
– Only 2% of USA in government housing; More of
Europe (30%)
Peripheral Urban Areas
• Most LDCs put poor in suburbs & rich in CBD
• Griffin-Ford (Latin American) Model = CBD with
wheel-like spokes
• Often grid-like organization with central plaza &
boulevard (Spanish influence)
• Squatter settlements (a.k.a. favela, barrio, slum,
shantytown, bustee, kampongs,…“disamenity
sector”) in suburbs start as illegal, temporary
squatters on the periphery/city’s edge
