Virginia-North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation
@ Virginia Tech
The Virginia-North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation @ Virginia Tech (VT AMP) aims to
increase the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs. The program’s goal is
to increase the number of students interested in, academically qualified for, and matriculating
into programs of graduate study. VT-AMP is part of a larger grant, the Louis Stokes Alliance for
Minority Participation (LSAMP). LSAMP is one of the many grants sponsored by the National
Science Foundation (NSF).
VT-AMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the
long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields,
particularly those underrepresented in STEM fields.
Incoming first year students are invited to participate in VT-AMP. If selecting, students will be
allowed to move on campus a week before school begins and participate in workshops that will
assist them in getting acclimated to the campus.
Eligibility Criteria:
United States citizen or Permanent Resident
Majoring in a STEM discipline (List of approved majors below)
Strong academic record in Mathematics and Science
Interest in attending graduate school
Application Process:
The application (attached) and supporting documents are due July 15, 2014. All applications
need to be mailed. Please do not e-mail application. Program participants will be notified by
August 1, 2014.
