The Perils of Underrepresentation
in Computing
In this talk, I will present some of the somber statistics of
underrepresentation in computing at the high school, college,
and professional level. This underrepresentation is a serious threat to our nation's
competitiveness in global markets, particularly those that are driven by technological
innovations. To solve such a broad problem requires many different tactics and approaches. I
will present a few national efforts underway and highlight a few of the activities that the
Coalition to Diversify Computing is pursuing. I will conclude my presentation with a discussion
of the value of diversity in computing and society as a whole.
Dr. Manuel A. Pérez-Quiñones is Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies
and Associate Professor of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. He is a member of the Center for
Human-Computer Interaction. He is co-chair of the Coalition to Diversify Computing (an
ACM/CRA/IEEE committee). His research interests include human-computer interaction,
personal information management, user interface software, and educational/cultural issues in
computing. He holds a DSc from The George Washington University and a BA (1983) & MS
