Unit 5: Polygon Task (15 Point Assessment)
Name: ________________________________
MYP: Criterion D (Real life application of mathematics)
Task:
1. Find a beautiful building in your neighborhood. Your building must have a wall or
window with a pentagon or larger-sided polygon. You must also be able to research the
building as well.
 A couple of options to consider: Your own house/apartment building, a church,
or library. You need to include a picture of your building (The picture does not
need to be color). Let me know if you need help with this.
2. Sketch your building. You may do 4 different side views. Please give reasonable
measurements for all parts. Justify the measurement and units that you are using.
3. With the wall or window that is a pentagon or larger - Research or use indirect
measurement to find one length of the wall or window (Recall using a mirror and
finding the image reflected in the mirror). Use trigonometry to find the remaining
lengths and angles of the polygon, and then find the area of the polygon. Neatly show
work for all calculations. Justify the accuracy of your lengths, angles, and area.
Paragraphs:
4. Tell us about your building. Some questions to consider: When was your building built?
Why was it built? Who built it? What is it made of? Consider the era it was built in,
how does the construction of the building reflect the happenings of the day?
5. Why is your building beautiful? Some questions to consider: How do polygons add to
the beauty of the building? How does the building connect to our study of geometry?
How do the materials add to the beauty of the building? If you were to change some
aspect of the building, what would it be and why?
