Georgia Southwestern State University Lesson Plan Guidelines Early Childhood Department Section 1 – Information that influences lesson content. Science Subject Area Grade Level 3rd CCGPS/GPS S3L1. Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat. a. Differentiate between habitats of Georgia (mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont, Atlantic Ocean) and the organisms that live there. Section 2 – A description of the learning objective, means of assessment, plans for differentiation, and materials necessary for teaching the lesson. Essential Question or I Can Statement What are the five regions in Georgia? What are the animals and plants that live in the different regions? Lesson Objective After the class discussion, the students will be able to list the five regions and tell what plants and animals are in each region with 100% accuracy. Students will have a project. The project will be to make a diorama out of a shoebox of a habitat in Georgia. They will also have a paper to go along with the diorama to explain the region. Questioning Questions will be in the guided practice. Opening Session Opening to include the following elements: “One, Two, Three eyes on me!” “One, Two eyes on you!” Students should be engaged at all times. Students should sit quietly, raise hand and wait to be called on to speak. Students should show the respect to other students if someone is talking. Everyone knows where Georgia is located. Today we will learn about the five regions in the Georgia and what animals and plants are in each region! Gain attention State behavior expectations Prior Knowledge Lesson Objective Session 3b: Work Session Instruction I. Identify your concept. (include auditory and visual learning styles.) Since we have already discussed where Georgia is I want to go more into Depth with Georgia! There are five regions that make up Georgia. I am going to play a voice thread that introduces the region and also shows plants and animals in each region! http://voicethread.com/share/5765817/ II. Define your concept. (Include auditory and visual learning styles.) The five regions of Georgia are Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Mountains, Swamp-Marsh, and the Atlantic Ocean. Each region has different animals and plants in the area, because each region has different habitats. Some regions like the swamp have alligators and otters, although you will not find many alligators in the Mountains. I have another video clip to show from YouTube. (Movie Maker) After watching the clip do you know what region we live in? What are the different Characteristics in each region? III. Explain your concept. Georgia’s regions have different habitats. This is because the lands in each area are different. Some places are dry, sandy and flat, while others are wet or elevation varies. Since the land is so different the animals and plants vary in each area. In the Mountains region, the most north region of Georgia, Cherokee Rose, Apple Trees and Azaleas are some of the major plants that thrive in the area. The animals commonly found are Black Bears, Deer, and Bobcats. In the Piedmont region, right below the Mountain region, you can find Peach Trees, Oak, and also Pecan Trees growing. The animals spotted are opossums, raccoons, and turkeys. Below Piedmont is the Coastal Plains, which takes up a good chunk of South Georgia. Live Oak, peanut fields, and cotton are very common in this region. The animals living here are rattlesnakes, wild boar, and armadillos. IV. Provide Examples Coral Reef is found in the Atlantic Ocean. Alligators are found in the Swamp-Marsh. Shrimp are found in the Atlantic Ocean. Black Bears are found in the Mountains. Sea Turtles are found in the Atlantic Ocean. V. Provide Non-examples Alligators are not found in the Mountains. Coral Reef is not found in the Swamp-Marsh. Shrimp are not going to be found in the Piedmont. Black Bears are not going to be in the Atlantic Ocean. Sea Turtles are not going to be found in the Coastal Plains. Guided Practice Independent Practice Differentiation Questions Lower level: What was our lesson about? (Low student) Lower Level: Tell me what the five regions were. (Low to Middle student) Higher Level: How are the five regions different? (Middle to High student) Higher Level: What plants and animals live in the different regions? (High Student) Two Activities: Activity- Have the class as a whole draw and label the map of Georgia with the different regions and put the different animals and plants where they belong. Activity- Students will play a game of Jeopardy on the Smart Board dealing with questions on each region Students will be making an art project to turn in the next day on the region of their choice. There must be a short summary with the drawing that includes key details, such as animals and plants, on that region. Section 4 - Summarizer Review Preview The information that was taught today should give the student a solid foundation of what the regions are in Georgia. They should know different plants and animals in each region. Tomorrow we will look into more detail about why these animals and plants survive in the region they live.
