Creating a Comic Book 6th Grade – History (Mr. Murad) Create a comic book about life in the Neolithic Age. Use the characters of Neolithic Nel and Neolithic Nick to tell a story about how ways of life changed over time, from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Age. 1. COVER PAGE (1 PAGE) Your comic book needs a colorful cover page with a title and drawings of the main characters, Nel and Nick. Color and add creative touches using one of the templates provided, or create your own cover page. 2. STORY PAGES (3 PAGES) The inside of the comic book should have three (3) story pages. Each story page will be related to one of the topics you studied (food supply, shelter, community, jobs, or trade). Select the three topics you think represent the most important changes from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Age. Write and draw on Student Handout C: Comic-Book Story Page Template, or create your own story pages (additional alternate templates will be provided if you need them). At the top of each story page, write one or two sentences that describe life during the Paleolithic Age. Complete the rest of the story page to show how the way of life changed in the Neolithic Age and why these changes are important. Follow these steps: • Use provided character sheets to create a comic story, OR create your own characters by drawing and coloring using your imagination • Write informative speech or thought bubbles for the characters. Bubbles should explain ways that life changed in the Neolithic Age, and they should explain why these changes are important. You may add captions below the comic scenes if it would help explain your story in a more complete way (captions are like narration in that they aren’t direct thoughts or quotes from your characters). • Add your own drawings of other animals, objects, and/or scenery. • Add other details to make your comic book more realistic. Summary: Comic books may be any size as long as you are explaining and describing the three topics you choose from the above list. You must also make comparison between Neolithic and Paleolithic Ages. Artistic ability is not the focus, but please feel free to be as creative as you wish. You will have one cover page and three “story” pages with each story page containing one of the three topics you choose. Optional suggestions: I thought I would suggest a few things to help generate some creative ideas if you are interested. These suggestions are not required; rather, they are meant to be suggestions for you and your creativity: • Use a unique paper stock to create a special “look-and-feel,” such as brown paper. • Use 3D materials to add interest or to bind your book uniquely (straw, sticks, rocks, etc) • Make a comic book an unusual size or format (square, horizontal rectangle, etc.). • Use colors that might fit the time period (for example, fluorescents may not be the best choice)
