BUSINESS ITEMS

The consent agendas from Group 1-4 appended below were approved. Group 2 was not in agreement about approval of the upper-division courses. The committee needs to clarify what constitutes an acceptable justification for upper-division general education courses. The

Committee should have a consistent policy. The current numbering system is complex so courses should be considered on a case by case basis. The form indicates general education courses should be introductory and foundational. However, some believe courses should also cover a breadth of information. Foundational implies something to build upon that does not require prerequisites.

General education courses should expose students to ideas and different way of knowing. Some students take general education courses as juniors or seniors so would presumably have the skill to succeed along with some advance students. Currently 20% of general education courses are at the upper-division level and over half of the ethics courses are upper-division. The committee may want to look at the distribution of students in the upper-division courses next spring. One possibility would be to require WRIT 101 as a prerequisite to these courses to prevent freshmen from taking them. ANTY 251 and PTRM 354 were conditionally approved pending the receipt of assessment information.

The Assessment Pilot Subcommittee reported on their progress. They have seven faculty members willing to participate. The next step will be to convene the group and provide examples. Hopefully the meeting will take place prior to the end of the semester. Individual courses do not have to assess each learning goal. A Moodle questionnaire could be included as part of assessment.

However, direct assessment (faculty evaluation of a test using a rubric) rather than self- reporting assessment is required for accreditation purposes. It is good practice to involve students in the process.

The revised form will be sent to members to provide feedback and edits. Assessment examples should be available for the next review cycle.

OOD AND

ELFARE

General Education is one of the top three things that frustrate veteran students. They are required to submit a four-year plan to the VA to receive funding. They rely on general education courses that meet more than one requirement in order to complete their degree within the allowed benefit period. It is very frustrating for these students when courses loose designations. The dynamic catalog is not finalized until December. A new plan must be submitted to the VA for approval. The program should be streamlined to lesson student frustration and confusion.

The Committee will not meet in December.
