Mansour, N. Phear, D. Spenser, A. Vernon, T. Weidner Minutes: The 11/18/14 minutes were amended and approved. The meeting began with the UM Minute and guests introduced themselves. Business Items The Service Learning Consent Agenda was presented by Gayle Hudgins and Andrea Vernon. There were three new course designations and 16 renewals. Each course was reviewed by 2 or 3 Service Learning Advisory Council Members. The items listed below were approved. The Science and Math Items appended below were approved. Several Guests (Professors Len Broberg, Terry Weidner, Dan Spencer, Nicky Phear, and Deena Mansour- Mansfield Center Associate Director) joined the meeting at 2:20 p.m. in support of the Vietnam Study Abroad Courses. Professor Spencer provided an overview of the holistic learning experience and addressed the questions asked by the subcommittee. A spreadsheet was viewed that detailed the breakdown of contact and out of classroom hours. Learning also takes place on bus rides and during meals that are not listed on the spreadsheet. Students are required to keep a journal and field notes. These writing assignments have different end goals. The Journal requires students’ observations and critical reflections. The field notes are geared toward scientific research. Deena Mansour and Terry Weidner explained that the experience is a joint effort with the US State Department and Can Tho University. This course is a true reflection of the University’s global mission. The consent agendas (appended) presented by Susan Caro, the General Education Committee Chair were approved. The Committee is also working on an assessment pilot project with general education courses in Science and Math. It has also been asked to consider a simplified program to alleviate some of the frustration of Veteran Students. The ENST Vietnam Travel Seminar courses ( ENST 427 Society, Economy and Environment of the Mekong Delta and ENST 437 Climate Change Effects and Adaptation in the Mekong Delta) were approved with one abstention. GPHY 313 & 324, the field courses offered by Northwest Connections were not approved. Two members were in favor, four against, and one abstained. The Schools Subcommittee has not yet confirmed requested changes to BMKT 207, Overview of Marketing. The program is looking into revising its introductory course that would cover some of this material. One suggestion is to offer an additional experimental offering of the course to avoid creating a new course and then removing it.
