Members present: H. Ausland, R. Baker, S. Caro, L. Frey, K. Huthaily, J. Randall, K. Reiser, F.
Rosensweig, N. White
Members Absent: L. Calderon,
Ex-officio member present: E. Johnson
Guest: S. Bradford
The minutes from 2/27/13 were amended and approved
Business Items:

The late Social Science courses (BGEN 105 and TASK 160) were reviewed, follow-up
requested and received, and approved by the subcommittee. The Committee concurred with the
recommendation.

The Historical and Cultural Studies Courses listed below were approved. The following courses
require further consideration. Follow-up is pending for ANTY 133H and the other courses were
generally troubling in terms of criteria interpretation and the context of survey courses.

The courses should be looked at by the full committee in order to have a fuller discussion
regarding the possibility of definition/ criteria that does not overlap with another general
education group. For example THTR 330 seems to be a better fit for Literary and Artistic
Studies. One distinction for the Literary and Artistic Group may be to consider works
autonomously rather than the form and structure that fits within a chronological order.

The Mathematics courses listed below were approved. College Trigonometry has different
placement levels indicated on the syllabi from the main campus and Missoula College. The
chairs were alerted to this situation and encouraged to bring the courses in alignment. The
catalog language is still being considered. The subcommittee may propose language that
includes reference to placement testing.

Professor Frey drafted the following definition of Group X: Indigenous and Global to
compliment the definition of Group Y: American and European.
Group X: Global Perspectives
These courses present a critical introduction to antecedents, principles, institutions, cultures,
traditions, and legacies of societies whose origins are other than European.
Criteria
Courses focus on any area and can be comparative in content or approach. The courses are
broad in theme, geography, or chronology. They are foundational and prepare students for
further study by raising core questions of an academic discipline.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this perspective, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate informed and reasoned understanding of historical and contemporary
behavior, ideas, institutions, and culture of areas not formed primarily by the European
tradition.
2. Analyze and evaluate what is distinctive and significant about the experience and legacy
of areas not determined primarily by the European experience.
The Committee discussed the definition. It does not resolve the problem of the general
education program being out of alignment with the MUS Core. Members were asked to review
the MUS Core and definitions to inform the discussion at the next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:38 PM.
