Project Title:
City of Pittsburgh Recycling Bin Distribution Program
Purpose of Project:
The purpose of the project is to develop a community building activity focused on recycling;
and develop a model for citywide recycling container deployment.
Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities (250 words or less):
1) Creation of a community led model for improving municipal recycling collection;
2) Reduction in litter as materials are containerized for set out;
3) Equality of access as all residents will be provided the tools with which to engage the
recycling program;
4) Increased environmental literacy across all residents as the effort will offer the direct
engagement of all users by program staff;
5) Emissions reductions through the increases in materials recycling and collection route
efficiency;
6) Partnerships that yield sustainable economic development as we refocus the City’s solid
waste system away from disposal and towards recycling reuse and waste avoidance.
