4H Curriculum Overview Spring Term 2015

English
Maths
Local History
Through exciting and high-quality texts,
children will be continuing to improve on their
grammar and punctuation skills, as well as
developing their ability to use powerful
description. They will be developing these skills:
- Writing in paragraphs
- Using fronted adverbials and subordination
- Listening to and discussing a wide range of
fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference
books
- The use of dictionaries
- Cursive handwriting
- Using subheadings, captions and other nonfiction features
- Similes and metaphors
- Expanded noun phrases
- Use of target connectives
In Maths, we will cover the following range of skills
and will be applying these during fun, problemsolving activities:
Science, History, Geography, Art,
D&T and Computing
Science – Electricity
Children will:
- Identify common electrical appliances
- Construct a simple series circuit, identify and
name basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs,
switches and buzzers
- Identify whether or not a lamp will light in a
simple series circuit, based on whether or not the
lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery
- Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit
- Number and place value
- Addition & Subtraction
- Multiplication & Division
- Statistics – time graphs and bar charts
- Equivalent fractions and comparing fractions
- Decimals, including solving money problems
- Length & Height
- Weight and capacity
- Converting between analogue and digital 12 and 24
hour clocks
- Symmetry
- Regular and irregular polygons
- Angles
- Eight compass directions
Art – Environmental Art
The children will be using water colour paints to create
pictures of their local environment. They will use
photographs they have taken from their trip around
the local area of Winlaton as a basis for their painting.

- Recognise common conductors and insulators,
DT – Making a house with electricity
The children will have the chance to build a
house with an electric light, which can be
switched on and off. This will combine the
children’s learning about electricity with their
learning about the local history of Winlaton.
PE
The children will be continuing with
swimming every Friday.
As well as this, they will start
Gymnastics and Dance in weekly PE
lessons.
Homework
(metals with being good conductors).
History – Local History
The children will study in depth their local area,
tracing how several aspects of national history are
reflected in their locality.
Music
The children will
continue to develop
their skills in guitar
lessons every Thursday
with Mr. Nicholson.
PSCHE and RE
Geography – Local Area
The children will be exploring the physical and human
features of their local environment on a trip to
Winlaton. They will use fieldwork to observe, measure,
record and present the human and physical features
using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans
and graphs, and digital technologies.
On a wider scale, they will be finding out how our
region compares and contrasts with another region in
Europe.
Computing

The children will be identifying long-term and short- Children will:

Children will also receive spellings and Maths Home Learning to consolidate learning in class.
