Each certification is valid for a four year period at which time the certificate may renew their credential. <INSERT PARAGRAPH RELATED TO SPECIFIC CERTIFICATION— SEE BELOW INFORMATION ABOUT EACH SPECIFIC CERTIFICATION FOR HISTORY FOR EACH EXAM> HISTORY paragraph: ACHPN® Certification in hospice and palliative care for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners) had its first national testing in May 2003 as a partnership with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). In December, 2004, HPCC acquired the hospice and palliative Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Exam, and successful candidates are now awarded the credentials ACHPN® (Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse). There are currently over 950 nurses who hold the ACHPN® credential. CHPN® The first Registered Nurse certification exam was offered in 1994 and awarded use of the credential CRNH (Certified Registered Nurse Hospice) to those successfully passing the exam. In 1999, the examination was expanded to include palliative care, and successful candidates are now awarded the credential CHPN® (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse). Currently there are nearly 12,000 nurses who hold the CHPN® credential. CHPPN® In 2009 the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) initiated the development of a hospice and palliative certification examination for the Pediatric Registered Nurse. The first national administration of the exam was in March 2011, with successful candidates awarded the credential CHPPN® (Certified Hospice and Palliative Pediatric Nurse). There are currently over 150 nurses who hold the CHPPN® credential. CHPLN® In 2003 the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) initiated the development of a hospice and palliative certification examination for the Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse. The first national administration of the exam was in September 2004, with successful candidates awarded the credential CHLPN® (Certified Hospice and Palliative Licensed Nurse). There are currently over 1000 nurses who hold the CHPLN® credential. CHPNA® In September 2002, the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) initiated certification for Nursing Assistants. Successful candidates are awarded the credential CHPNA® (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant). Currently there are over 4,000 nursing assistants who hold the CHPNA® credential. CHPCA® In 2007 the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) initiated the development of a hospice and palliative certification exam for the hospice and palliative care administrator. The first exam for administrators was given in September 2008 and the credential awarded is CHPCA® (Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Administrator). There are currently over 250 administrators who hold the CHPCA® credential. CPLC® In 2012 the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) initiated the development of an examination for perinatal loss professionals. The first exam for perinatal loss professionals was given in June 2013 and the credential awarded is CPLC® (Certified in Perinatal Loss Care). There are currently over 80 certificants who hold the CPLC® credential. The Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) is the only organization that offers specialty certification for all levels of the hospice and palliative nursing care team, including administrators and perinatal loss professionals. Over 18,000 health professionals hold HPCC credentials that demonstrate professional commitment to safe, ethical, and evidence-based care. Preferred as a current measure of continuing competence in the dynamic and evolving health care professional role, HPCC certification is valid for four years and can be renewed.
