Name: ____________________________________________ This booklet should be given to you during the first week of term. The deadline to complete all the tasks is the week beginning Monday 19th October 2015. Please hand completed work to your Humanities teacher so they can mark it. The best work will receive rewards and prizes. If you need help, ask your Humanities teacher or visit the library at break or after school from 3-4pm. Topic 1: Humanities Skills – drawing plans and researching history Plans: A plan is an overhead or bird’s-eye view of a building or room. Plans require accurate measurement and careful drawing. Builders use plans to tell them where they need to place bricks. Town planners use plans to make improvements to a city. Obviously a real building is bigger than the paper you draw it on so you need to use a scale to make things proportional. Here are some useful tips for drawing plans: Remember it is an overhead view They are best drawn in pencil and using a ruler You need to measure things carefully and produce a suitable scale. Here is an example plan of a bedroom. 1. On plain paper (your teacher can give you some if you need it) draw a plan of your bedroom. Remember to say what things are in your room and don’t forget to measure them and produce a suitable scale. Researching: History is all about the story of the past. It can be from 10,000 years ago or yesterday. History is about the people, events and discoveries which have shaped our world and the changes they have brought. Good research questions about people; When were they born, when did they die and any other important dates? Why are they famous? What did they achieve? Why were they important? Who else was connected to them and what role did they play in their lives or what they thought of them? Was what they did good or bad? Why? Good research questions about events/discoveries When did it happen? Did other events lead up to this? Who was involved and what part did they play? What exactly happened? Did this event affect/change history and if so, how? Did this lead to other developments/events/ideas and if so, what? 2. Find out about one event, person, discovery or invention and produce a poster, PowerPoint, Moviemaker presentation or a role play/ drama about it. You can work on this on your own, in a pair or a small group. If you are working in a group everyone must contribute to the final task and you must make it clear who did what. You can include pictures, portraits and maps. If you use the internet, do not copy and paste text. It must be your own work and that will be part of the assessment. Topic 2: My School The environment is all around us and we can affect it in many ways. Some of these effects are good and some are bad. Here are some environmental problems: Pollution Global Warming Deforestation Our environment can be polluted in many ways. We drop litter onto the ground or dump sewage into the water or we release harmful gases into the air. Harmful gases come mainly from cars and factories. Carbon dioxide is an example of a harmful gas. Global Warming is a problem caused by polluting the air. It means the Earth is warming up which will lead to sea level rise and changes in weather. It is hard to say exactly what will happen but many places on the coast will be flooded. Southampton is a city on the coast. Deforestation is the cutting down of trees. Trees actually help our environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. If we cut lots of trees down global warming may happen much quicker. So What Can We Do? There are many things we can do to protect our environment and a few are listed below. Don’t drop litter Walk instead of drive Plant trees instead of cutting them down On lined paper answer the following questions; 1) Have you ever dropped litter? Explain why and what should you have done instead. 2) Throughout the day at Chamberlayne College you see people picking up litter dropped by pupils. Draw a poster that could be put up around school to encourage pupils to put their rubbish in the bin. You could suggest rewards for pupils who put litter in the bin or punishments for pupils who don’t. Topic 3: Inspirational People You will be looking at inspirational people in class and one in particular called Martin Luther King. You will see how some individuals have the presence and qualities to help others achieve their goals. 1. Produce an information booklet on one inspirational person. You can either produce the booklet as a PowerPoint or simply write a report, the choice is yours. It must be accurate and reflect the true nature of that person’s life. Try to find out What did they do? Why did they do it? Who benefited from what they did?
