TEACHERS’ NOTES
The First World War: Fight and Flight
Before your visit
o Make sure that adult helpers have a map of the site and the helpers’ notes
(below). They must know the time and location of their teaching session.
o Have a look at our KS2 or KS3 museum trails for this session. You can print
and copy a trail for pupils to use, or just use it as a source of ideas to
structure your visit.
o Remember to bring payment with you on the day.
Your session
The First World War: Fight and Flight session lasts for 60 minutes.
Coats and bags should be left in the Eating Space – please, no food or drink in the
Learning Spaces, for either pupils or adults.
Teachers are welcome to take photographs, but not film. Pupils will be asked to put
cameras away so that they can concentrate on the session.
The session uses the stories of three people from the First World War, a pilot, a
soldier and a munitions worker, to explore artefacts in the museum’s collection and
answer three enquiry questions. If you are working on particular questions about
the First World War at school, please let us know and we can usually adapt the
session to fit your needs.
Learning Objectives

experiences of an airman, a soldier and a munitions worker
 To explore large and small objects as a way of discovering more about
