Medieval Era Assessment Portfolio
You will need to complete all of the tasks listed below:
Task 1: Coat of Arms (Drawing)
Heraldic shields were useful in medieval times for more than just protection from arrows and
swords. Your task is to design a shield suitable for a fearsome knight. You must also explain the
design choices you make relating to the shape, colour and images on your shield. You may use the
internet for research but the design must be original.
Task 2: Knowledge Questionnaire (Part 1)
Answer the questions in the Knowledge Questionnaire. You may use your exercise books, text books
and the internet to help you locate the information. Remember the number of marks allocate per
question tells you how many pieces of information you need to provide.
Task 3: Visual Timeline (using Word or Powerpoint)
You are to create your own timeline of important events and things that occurred during the period
from 500-1500CE. You need to include a picture that relates to each event and also in your own
words indicate why the event is important. (You might like to look at some of the timeline events in
your textbooks to help you). You will need to choose one of your slides and report on it to the class.
Task 4: Castle task (Made or drawn and written)
You are the chief engineer for King William I the Conqueror and have been issued a royal decree to
create a super castle. King William has very specific requirements which have been listed on the castle
task sheet for you. You will need to incorporate all of these elements into the castles design, write a
report to William advising him about your amazing castle and how you have successfully defended it
against attack.
Task 5: Choose one of the following topics: Crime and Punishment; Medicine and Health or Religion
and the Crusaders. You need to create a speech and powerpoint about your chosen topic that
teaches your fellow students all they need to know. (Oral + Powerpoint) You will need to develop a
series of inquiry questions to guide your report, use a variety of primary and secondary sources and
reference your information using Neil’s Toolbox.
Task 6: Blog response
Answer the questions on the history blog
Task 7: Black Death pamphlet (Publisher)
Imagine you are living in England at the time of the Plague. You need to create a pamphlet using
publisher that tells people about the Black Death. Your pamphlet must include information about:




Where it is thought the disease came from and how it spread to England.
The symptoms.
Signs of the plague and what you can do (think about common cures).
What groups are doing to in response to their experience with the plague.
Your pamphlet must be designed to influence your audience so you need to use persuasive
language, choose images for effect and make informed choices about your formatting (use of colour,
font, titles, placement of information, etc.)
