Founded in 1974, the AAANZ acts as the peak professional body for art historians,
critics, curators, artists and art students across Australasia. Our Executive has
representatives in each Australian state and across New Zealand.
Your membership has many benefits.
Firstly it enables the AAANZ to hold an art history conference in a different city
annually featuring prominent keynote speakers. This provides an academic
framework in which to operate professionally, and a network to interact with
colleagues. Your membership also supports the development of postgraduate
student training through our student bursary scheme, master-classes and
postgraduate streams.
Secondly it administers eight (8) annual awards to reward the best art historical
books and journals published annually by our members.
Thirdly we distribute a monthly newsletter and publish the Journal of Art, the first
refereed art-historical journal in Australasia, recognised for its quality by the rankings
of the Australian Research Council. It features essays, reviews and criticism that
enhance contemporary practice and historical understandings of all aspects of visual
art. The Journal is now published twice a year, with print and online access now
available.
Finally your membership fosters young scholars and supports inclusivity for
Indigenous and other emerging voices in art history, notably via the recently
introduced prize for Best publication essay/catalogue/book by either an Indigenous
Australian or New Zealand Mâori.
Without your continued support the AAANZ cannot exist.
