NRSG 201 Complex Medical Surgical Nursing – Clinical Sim Lab Spring 2014 Gender Differences This is an activity to look at differences between males and females in our culture. Step 1: Make a list of qualities/emotions/behaviors for women and men within the three categories. These should be both positive and negative attributes. Male Patients Male Co-Workers Male Patients . Female Patients Female Co-Workers Female Patients . Step 2: Write these qualities on a different sheet of paper, color coded highlighter: yellow for patients, blue for bosses, green for co-workers. Do not color code for male or female. Cut out the statements keeping colors together. Give those statements to the other team. Step 3: Divide the statements into positive and negative, keeping colors together, and tape onto page. (If there is a difference of opinion on rather a statement is positive or negative – majority rules.) Step 4: Return the statements divided into positive and negative to the original group Step 5: Group will evaluate each statement in positive or negative column and determine if the group attributed the statements to males or females. 1. Looking at the statements, what does this tell us about perception of each category – does the group tend to attribute positive traits to male/female bosses, male/female co-workers, male/female patients? Why? 6. Does the team agree with the other team’s evaluation of positive and negative/why? 7. Based on positive traits, which did the group prefer, male/female in each category? Why? 8.
