Observation Tool Ratio of Interactions Monitoring Form DIRECTIONS FOR OBSERVING RATIO OF INTERACTIONS

1. This tool is used to measure the amount/type of interactions a teacher has with the overall class, males, females, and/or specific students.

2. If desired, use the coding system to target specific males or females in the class.

(e.g. Male

N = Nick, Female

S = Sandra)

3. Calculate the ratio of positive and negative interactions for the overall class, males, females, and/or targeted students.

NOTE:

□ □ □ It is the student behavior that is occurring at the time the interaction is initiated,

not the tone of the interaction

, that determines whether an interaction is positive or negative. When a teacher interacts with a student who is exhibiting appropriate behavior, count the interaction as positive. When a teacher interacts with a student who is exhibiting inappropriate behavior, count the interaction as negative. Responses to “negative” behavior do not mean the teacher is responding poorly. Participating Teacher Time Observation Begins Date of Observation Time Observation Ends M = Male F = Female C = Classwide I = Individual

Coding system (if used)

_____ = ___________________________ _____ = ___________________________ _____ = ___________________________ _____ = ___________________________ Attention to Positive

Example: M M M F M F F C F N F M C M M (15)

Attention to Negative

Example: S S M M M F M S M M S F M M S M C C M C (20)
