Protoctista, Prokaryote and Fungi Culture Outline Montessori Materials □After receiving introductory lesson with the Kingdoms of Protoctista, Prokaryote and Fungi material, work on the blank Kingdoms charts. Self-correct when necessary. □In a group of two or three students, make rough notes of the research from the Montessori cards from each Kingdom □Create your own version of the material. Be sure to write the facts into your own words and be creative with the way you display your work. Some display options include: Booklet, Powerpoint slideshow, matching game or a trivia game. Don’t forget colourful drawings! Language/ Creative □ Receive a lesson on personification and create a brainstorming web of ideas of what life would be like for an organism from either of the three Kingdoms. □To prepare for writing diary entries, complete an outline to decide what happens to your organism in chronological order. □Write 5 diary entries in rough. (1/2 page to 1 page each) *Be authentic and in character. Be creative in the layout of your diary. □ Once edited, cursive write the good copy of your diary entries Geography □ Choose an organism from one of the three Kingdoms and research its natural habitat. Make rough notes to then write into your own words. Discover where in the world it is located, other animals or plant life in the area, climate conditions, etc. □Cursive write your research and be creative of the display of information Science □Receive a lesson on the Scientific Method *See handout □Research mould (fungi) experiments online or in books and follow the procedure to complete the experiment yourself. If you have your own idea for an experiment, check with the teacher first before attempting. *Be sure to label all your specimens □Complete all areas of the Scientific Method while conducting your experiment Vocabulary Development □Create a glossary of words you find difficult to understand during your research. □Define the terms using a dictionary □Using a variety of spelling games from the Logic of English Program, practice spelling the terms with a friend Music □Watch the Protist Song video (found on the links page of the Upper Elementary Website) □ With a friend, create a song of your own about something you’ve researched for this culture unit. If you don’t want to rap, feel free to use your ukulele to play a familiar tune and change the lyrics. Summary/Research □Watch the BBC Planet Earth video clip: Cordycepts Fungus- Attack of the Killer Fungus (found on the links page of the Upper Elementary Website) □Write a summary of the video □Research and describe the relationship another organism from one of the three Kingdoms might have with another organism in their natural habitat Art □ Create a diorama of the habitat you researched for the Geography component. Be sure to use various crafting supplies to make your creation.
