How is an entire ecosystem economically valuable? What 3 factors affect biodiversity: How does the equator affect it? EXTENSION AND ENDANGERMENT Causes Habitat destruction/fragmentation GENETICS DNA! Carry hereditary information LARGE gene pool: diversity causes adaptations. Better adaptive to survive changes. Exotic species (can knockout a keystone species) SMALL gene pool: less adaptaive Poaching Pollution Solutions Captive breeding (released afterwards) Preventative laws Habitat preservation The number of different species in an area 10-11 million species have been identified so far B I O Means “life” D I V E R S I T Y means “variety or many” Can we estimate the biodiversity of earth? No, because we do not know all of the species we cannot estimate the biodiversity of earth. Why do we need to protect biodiversity? Source of beauty, has economic value, has ecological value- when keystone species are lost it affects the entire ecosystem. How is an entire ecosystem economically valuable? Plants and animals provide the raw materials for life (food, clothing, medicine) not to mention oxygen What 3 factors affect biodiversity: Area-the bigger the area the larger the biodiversity can be, niche diversity and climate How does the equator affect it? The closer to the equator you get the larger the diversity is (rainforests and coral reefs). In the tropics (located around the equator) you have constant temperature and large amounts of rainfall and sunlight. This causes lots of growth and opportunities for adaptations.
