Curriculum Committee Meeting
November 21, 2013

Guest(s) in Attendance:
1. Approval of minutes for meeting held on October 17, 2013; Richard Gutierrez moved to accept
minutes, Bill Serban seconded; all in favor, motion passed.
2. Approval of amended agenda deleting the Old Business item for Education Associate degree:
Richard Gutierrez moved to accept agenda, Marlene Chavez-Toivanen seconded; all in favor,
motion passed.
3. Old Business
A. Computer Science Degree updates: Karen Henry
Karen Henry distributed hand-outs for computer science. The first showed NMSU-Grants
courses and their alignment to the requirements for industry certificates. The second was the
revised Associate of Applied Science in Digital Graphics Technology. A requested change was to
change the name of ENGL 218G to Scientific and Technical Communication. This change was
approved (Richard Gutierrez moved and Marlene Chavez-Toivanen seconded). The third handout was the revised Associate of Applied Science of Creative Media Technology. A requested
change was to change the name of ENGL 218G to Scientific and Technical Communication. This
change was approved (Richard Gutierrez moved and Megan Stoneking seconded). The fourth
hand-out was the revised Associate of Applied Science of Computer Technology. A requested
change was to change the name of ENGL 218G to Scientific and Technical Communication. This
change was approved (Joan Erben moved and Megan Stoneking seconded).
B. Building Trades Certificate in woodworking: Harry Sheski
This certificate revision has been submitted to the provost’s office for the CIP code.
C. Robotics/Automation Certificate: Harry Sheski
This was tabled until the January meeting. Marlene Chavez-Toivanen asked about the
status of the electronic technology program. This program will be removed from Banner
after the students who are now in it receive the program certificates. Harry Sheski indicated
that, if at some future date, the program becomes viable once again, it can be added to the
school catalog without difficulty. Harry Sheski also indicated that a needs assessment is
planned for community needs in this area.
4. New Business
A. Commercial Driver’s License Certificate – A discussion was started about the possibility of
this.
B. BOT – A discussion was started about these courses and it was reported that no classes in
this discipline are taught at NMSU – Grants because of a lack of interest.
