The Endangered Snow Leopard! ❤ Made By Janessa, Karina & Tia ❤ Overview ❤ The population of snow leopards aren’t increasing, instead, it’s dropping. We need to save these adorable creatures. Facts! ❤ Snow leopards only live in the icy mountains. The snow leopard, known for its beautiful, thick fur, has a white, yellowish or soft grey coat with ringed spots of black on brown. The markings help camouflage it from prey. With their thick coats, heavy fur-lined tails and paws covered with fur, snow leopards are perfectly adapted to the cold and dry habitats in which they live. Diet ❤ Snow leopards primarily hunt wild sheep and goats. Snow leopards are also known to eat smaller animals like rodents, hares and game birds. They only kill twice a month. How long do they live? ❤ They can live up to 15 years in captivity. Did you know? ❤ 1. Snow leopards have grey are light green eyes which is unusual because most big cats have yellow or gold eyes. 2.Snow leopards have very large paws that act as snowshoes and keep them from sinking into the snow. 3.Their paws are also completely fur-covered, protecting them from the cold. Behaviour ❤ They stalk their prey and usually spring from a distance of 20 - 50 feet. Their long and powerful hind legs help snow leopards leap up to 30 feet, which is 6 times longer than their body length. Cubs and Mating ❤ A female snow leopard gives birth to 2-3 cubs at a time. Females give birth in rocky dens lined with their fur. The young follow their mother on hunts at three months and remain with her through their first winter. A female and male mates around January and mid-March. Habitat ❤ Mountain steppes and coniferous (pine/evergreen) forest scrub at high altitudes (5900-18000 feet). Prefer mountain regions in the winter, moving to meadows and rocky areas during the summer months. Names ❤ The Snow Leopard was given its first scientific name in 1775 by naturalist Johann von Schreber. The scientific name for snow leopard is Panthera uncia. Fast facts! ❤ Type: Mammal Diet: Carnivore Size: 4 to 5 ft (1.2 to 1.5 m); Tail, 36 in (91 cm) Weight: 60 to 120 lbs (27 to 54 kg) Protection status:Endangered Families And When They Were Discovered ❤ Snow leopards belong to the Felidae (Cat Family). It was discovered in 1761 by North Americans. Ghost Leopard! ❤ The snow leopard is often called the gray ghost and may soon become only a ghost . We need to help this creature from poaching and habitat loss for this beautiful beyond description cat. In the words of biologist George Schaller, "When the last snow leopard has stalked among the crags, a spark of life will have gone, turning the mountains into stones of silence." Amongst all of the world's great cats, the snow leopard is probably the biggest mystery. Their fur ❤ Their fur is really beautiful. Hunters and poachers, kill them for their fur and use that fur to sell to get money. Their spots on their coats, help them to camouflage in the snow. When did they come endangered? ❤ They were endangered since 1972. They are still endangered now. Help the snow leopards! Why are they endangered? ❤ They are endangered because of global warming and human hunting. Global warming melts the ice on the mountains. Their fur is too warm for the sun. If the ice melts, there would be just water left and snow leopards are bad at swimming. Human hunting is another way for the snow leopard to lose population. Humans are one of their predators. How you can help ❤ You can spread the word. Tell others! We need everyones help. Maybe other people can stop hunting them? We want to save these snow leopards.
