Whitland Area Neighborhood Association
Steering Committee Meeting
At the home of Revell Michael
July 10, 2014
Joel Covington presiding. Those in attendance: Gwyneth Neuss, Denise Hawkins, Dianne Neal, Kirk
Davis, Revell Michael, Adele Tyler, Robinson Regen, Brooke Shuster, Kathy Pennington and Michael
Rook.
Prior to the official start of the meeting Kirk Davis played for the group a song about the Whitland
Neighborhood that he help write.
The meeting was called to order and a motion made to approve the May 2014 minutes, this motion
received a second and all in attendance approved.
Gwyneth began to review the Treasurer’s Report that she had sent out via email earlier. A question was
asked about the amount of neighborhood due’s collections 2014 vs. 2013. It was reported that at the
moment the collection appeared to be a little more and pacing to surpass 2013 collection. Checks are
still continuing to follow into Gwyneth for dues. There is an issue with the functionality of our PayPal
Account for payment; Brooke is working to get the issue corrected. She will send an email out via our
Listserv when all is up and running. Big ticket items for the association thus far this year have been
Movies in the park and street sign repair. Gwyneth reviewed information she received from the
Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office about registration fees for charitable organizations would
decrease. Our neighborhood association will see this decrease start next calendar year.
The information that was provided via email to all committee members from Melanie detailing the most
recent updates on traffic calming and meter repair at West End and Leonard was reviewed.
Joel reported that a small but determined group assembled for the May creek clean-up and worked hard
to continue clearing this area. Also, a neighborhood resident Ethan Yappen, wishes to support his Eagle
Scout Project with landscaping along the creek in the rain garden/bridge/Carden Avenue area based off
of plans made through the association some years earlier. Related activity of tree planting along street
side of Leonard and Carden is proposed as a December/January project through the association for
continued creek restoration. It was mentioned that the area of the creek at South Wilson and Rolland
needs attention; this was discussed as the possible next area of concentration for clean-up. Brooks
Matthews has a Master Plan for tree planting in the neighborhood and would be a good resource for
information and implementation of future planting projects.
Denise reported on the Whitland 4th of July; weather was good, plenty of food, a great day overall and
wonderful neighborhood event! Also, recapped that Patriot’s Party was well attended and all food this
year was prepared by the host committee.
We will look to conduct and provide information in a future neighborhood newsletter of a wildlife
inventory along the creek.
Denise is still collecting for Walden’s Puddle.
Other Business: Nextdoor has expressed an interest in setting up a new neighborhood section that
would encompass the Whitland and Richland sides along West End Avenue together.
Kathy will invite to a future Steering Committee meeting Dana Miller and Luci Crow. These two
individuals have potential to help lead a Home Tour. Once we have leadership in place for a 2015 Home
Tour, we will develop a Home Tour Committee.
Meeting Adjourned.
