Introduction Teacher explains that we will arrange the class into groups of four later in (Time: 5 mins.) todays lesson. Students will be directed to turn their chairs to the desks behind to form these groups. Presentation of Objectives: Teacher explains that by the end of this lesson: Students should be able to use the Past Simple tense when talking about what they did during the holidays. This is a grammar point of the lesson. Students should be able to use time phrases such as in, at, on, ago in an appropriate manner by the end of the lesson. Students should be able to use new vocabulary about holiday events and activities by the end of the lesson. Teacher then writes on the board - Grammar: past simple, Vocabulary: Holidays, Time phrases: in, at, on, ago. Activity 1: (10 mins.) Teacher will first explain that the Past Simple is used to talk about a finished action or state in the past – that it can be something that happened once or many times. Teacher will use the board to illustrate the formation of the Past Simple tense in the positive form, negative form and question form. Show how regular verbs in Past Simple usually end in – Development ed and show some exceptions such as like, carry, stop. Mention that many (Time: 30 irregular forms have a different form in Past Simple but we will look at them mins.) more closely in the next lesson. Teacher then prompts students to use the same regular verbs from the last lesson and also introduces two new verbs. Teacher marks these verbs on the board: - Play, watch, talk, want, like and two new verbs wait and listen. Teacher will use a different section of the board to present the time phrases that are part of the learning in todays lesson. These will be: in, at, on, ago. Examples will be marked on the board for these time phrases: In December… On Monday… At eight o’clock… Two years ago… Teacher will again use another section of the board for any new vocabulary arising from todays lesson. This new vocabulary will be based on the theme of holiday events and activities. Teacher asks the students questions about the kind of activities they did on holiday using the new verbs: “I waited for the train.” “I listened to my favorite K-pop band.” Activity 2: (10 mins.) Teacher will set a comprehension test through handing out a piece of reading and accompanying questions based around the key points of the lesson. At this stage students are asked to work by themselves and answer the questions. At the end of the activity students will be asked to swap copybooks and correct their partners work. Teacher walks around the classroom and monitors the student’s work. Then the Teacher will ask the questions from the reading piece and get all students to say the answers aloud through choral drilling of the correct answer. An example of this is: T- “what did Taylor and Kim do at 8pm?” S- “Taylor and Kim watched a movie at 8pm.” (Please find comprehension piece of writing attached below.) Activity 3: (10 mins.) Teacher will now set a production task using an interactive game for the students. Teacher demonstrates with one group how to play the game. Students are asked to pick up a verb card. Student then asks the student on his/her left a question using this verb in its correct past simple formation. Student on the left then answers the question again in the correct form. If question and answer are correct then both students are awarded one point each. Teacher monitors respective groups as they play the game and makes corrections and helps with vocabulary where appropriate. Summary & Closing: While referencing the board the Teacher reviews the key points of the lesson. Teacher gives feedback regarding common errors that were made during the lesson and highlights the correct form of these errors. Teacher will then hand out an activity sheet for homework Conclusion (Time: 5 mins.) Evaluation of Objectives: Teacher references the board to where the lesson objectives were originally put up and once more reinforces the three forms of the past simple tense - positive, negative and question. Next Class Irregular verbs used in the Past Simple tense will be taught in the next lesson.
