Waste Minimisation and Recycling
The University of Sunderland Sustainable Procurement Policy and Strategy represents a commitment
to the University’s Environmental and Sustainability Policy and Corporate objective of integrating
sustainability and carbon management.
The Legal, Governance and Business Assurance service and Executive should where possible
endeavour to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability.
All staff members are encouraged to dispose of any waste in a responsible way and are reminded of
the following:
You can now include the following in your recycling bins which are located throughout the 4th floor,
Edinburgh building:

White Paper: Staples accepted.

Mixed Paper: Can include flyers, magazines, newspapers, journals, books, directories
including all telephone directories, catalogues, envelopes with and without windows, shredded
paper, post it notes, wrapping paper, junk mail and white board which includes brochure covers

Plastic: All plastic bottles including milk and soft drinks bottles, food trays e.g. microwave
meals/yoghurt pots/fruit cartons, plastic bags, carrier bags, plastic cups, cling film, bubble wrap,
plastic cutlery, old pens (minus ink), plastic sleeves, CD cases, coat hangers, shampoo/body care
products, soap/laundry/detergent and other household products.

Confidential Waste: Both paper and electronic confidential waste.

Cans, Tins and small Metals: All drinks cans, aerosol cans, food tins (empty), nails, screws,
pots and pans.
The following items can also be disposed off, please contact your ASHEC to advise:

Batteries: Most types of batteries can be taken to your Caretaker for recycling.

Printer/Toner cartridges: can be disposed of in the charity ‘Dogs Trust’ bin located on the 3rd
Floor within Human Resources, See ASHEC’s for further information.

Cardboard: All types of cardboard boxes including corrugated cardboard, file folders, office
binders, frozen food boxes, cereal boxes, shoe boxes etc. Please contact your Caretaker for
collection/removal to the nearest cardboard container.

Wood: All items including chairs, desks (including metal legs) pallets, MDF, chipboard,
plywood, cupboards, tables etc.

Glass, Large metals, Polystyrene, Bricks and sand, Ceramics, Concrete, Rags
Staff are reminded to reuse any stationary items where possible, such as folders, plastic pockets,
card board storage boxes etc.
